Overview

What drives a century-old manufacturer to trade cooling fins and open air for a radiator and coolant? The answer can be summed up in two words: Indian Scout. With this 1133 cc liquid-cooled V-twin, the Springfield firm planted a serious dart in the side of the custom competition. A technical choice that made purists cringe, but one that allows this Indian Scout to boast 94 horsepower and 97.6 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm. Figures that place it well above its natural rival, the Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200, and make it the supercharged black sheep of the Indian lineup. In 2020 trim, it gets revised braking with floating discs and new calipers, a Sport seat, and passenger footpegs finally included as standard. Updates that progressively address the minor complaints accumulated since the model's return. The A2 license is accessible with a restrictor that shaves off just 6 horsepower, a loss barely noticeable from the saddle.

The engine block deserves a closer look. This 60-degree V-twin, fed by fuel injection, runs with a 10.7:1 compression ratio and breathes through four valves per cylinder. The finish is meticulous, almost ostentatious: the machined surfaces, the curves of the cylinder heads, the initials engraved in metal—all of it tells the story of an engine designed to be admired as much as ridden. The belt drive and 6-speed gearbox do their job without fuss. Up against a Triumph Bonneville Bobber or a Yamaha Bolt, this Indian Scout custom plays the card of technical modernity beneath unapologetically neo-retro styling. Those looking for an Indian Scout Bobber will find a more radical variant in the range—stripped down, with flat bars and a shortened rear suspension. The Scout Sixty, with its engine reduced to 999 cc, rounds out the offering for tighter budgets.

The cast aluminum frame is the other surprise. This is a far cry from the tubular steel chassis typical of the custom segment. The result: 249 kg wet weight, which remains restrained for an American machine of this displacement. The 1562 mm wheelbase stretches the silhouette and stabilizes everything on the highway, while the seat height of 656 mm reassures smaller riders. The telescopic fork and twin lateral shock absorbers do the bare minimum in terms of suspension, with no sporting pretension. The braking, with a single front disc gripped by a two-piston caliper and a rear disc with a single-piston caliper, feels light for a machine capable of reaching 200 km/h. Optional ABS partially makes up for this confidence deficit.

Indian Scout

The 12.5-liter tank demands frequent stops. It's the Scout's recurring shortcoming, and you either accept it or invest in a larger tank. For a Sunday ride or urban commuting, it's manageable. For eating up miles, you'd be better off looking at the Indian Scout Rogue or considering a Chief. At €14,490, the 2020 Scout positions itself opposite the Harley Softail Standard, with a compelling argument: raw power and a distinctly different mechanical personality. The Indian Scout used market is starting to offer 2017–2019 model years at attractive prices, making Indian Scout customization all the more tempting for those wanting to build a bespoke project.

The heritage weighs heavy. From the Scout 101 of the 1920s to Burt Munro's records at Bonneville, this name carries a legend that Harley can only envy. The 2020 Scout is not a perfect machine: its braking lacks bite, its range is stingy, and its suspension could use a step up in quality. But it possesses that extra soul, that blend of technical modernity and historical lineage that makes it endearing. For the urban rider or Sunday cruiser who wants to stand out without sacrificing performance, this motorcycle remains a solid and singular choice in the custom landscape.
