Overview

What drives a century-old manufacturer to trade cooling fins and air for a radiator and coolant? The answer comes down to two words: Indian Scout. Born in the 1920s, a speed record holder under Burt Munro's hands, this Indian Scout motorcycle returns to the lineup with a water-cooled 1133 cc V-twin. A technical choice that rubbed some purists the wrong way, but one that puts this machine on ground that the American competition struggled to occupy.

Indian Scout

The 60° V-twin produces 95 horsepower at 8,100 rpm and 97 Nm of torque from just 5,600 rpm. On paper, that's modest compared to the 1,890 cc of the Chief and Chieftain. In practice, it's the black sheep of the range — the one that favors punch over leisurely cruising. The engine, fed by fuel injection and linked to a 6-speed belt-driven transmission, features a 10.7:1 compression ratio and a 73.6 x 99 mm bore/stroke that reveals a long-stroke character with a taste for low-end torque. Where a Harley Sportster S plays the Revolution Max card with variable valve timing, the 2023 Indian Scout stays true to a more conventional but perfectly dialed-in architecture. The result is an Indian Scout custom that pulls hard through the midrange without ever turning brutal.

The chassis follows the same philosophy of restrained modernity. A cast aluminum frame, a 41 mm telescopic hydraulic fork with 120 mm of travel, and twin rear shocks limited to 76 mm. Braking relies on dual 298 mm discs, a dual-piston caliper up front, single-piston at the rear, all monitored by ABS. It's just adequate for a motorcycle weighing 247 kg dry, 256 kg fully fueled. The Honda Rebel 1100, some thirty kilos lighter, offers comparable braking hardware but with a weight advantage that makes itself felt in daily riding. On the other hand, the 649 mm seat height reassures absolutely everyone, from the freshly licensed A2 beginner (a restricted version exists, at the cost of 6 fewer horsepower) to the seasoned tourer racking up the miles. The 12.5-liter tank demands frequent stops — a recurring shortcoming of this segment.

Indian Scout

Indian Scout customization has become an ecosystem of its own. The Indian Scout Bobber variant, with its flat handlebar and stripped-down lines, appeals to those who want a bobber-style Indian Scout custom without going through a custom shop. The Indian Scout Sixty long served as the entry point before fading away, while the Indian Scout Rogue and Indian Scout Bobber Twenty expanded the family into more radical territory. The accessories catalog lets you transform the stock Scout into a personal machine, and the used Indian Scout market remains active — a sign that residual value holds over time. For 2024, Indian overhauled the platform entirely with a new generation, making the 2023 model year particularly attractive on the used Indian Scout Bobber market for anyone seeking a proven platform at a lower price.

At €15,490, the 2023 Indian Scout motorcycle positions itself against the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster and the Kawasaki Vulcan S, but in a more premium segment. The entry price is steep, the tank too small, the braking just barely sufficient. Yet this machine possesses something that spec sheets can't measure: the heritage of the Indian Scout 101, the Bonneville speed records, and that rare ability to blend mechanical modernity with old-school attitude. This is a motorcycle chosen as much with the heart as with the head.
