Overview
What drives a century-old manufacturer to trade cooling fins for a prominent radiator? The answer fits in one word: Scout. When Indian resurrected this legendary name—the very one that conquered the Wall of Death and carried Burt Munro toward his speed records in the 1960s—the brand made a bold bet. Fitting a liquid-cooled V-twin into a custom, fifteen years after Harley-Davidson took the plunge with the V-Rod, meant embracing a clean break. The 2022 Indian Scout owns that break completely, and that's a good thing.

Beneath this taut-lined cruiser bodywork lies a 1133 cc liquid-cooled V-twin producing 94 horsepower and 97.6 Nm of torque at 5,900 rpm. On paper, that seems modest next to the 1,811 cc powering the Chief and Roadmaster. In practice, it's a different story entirely. This engine is a piece of mechanical craftsmanship, precisely finned, fed by 60 mm throttle body injection, and mated to a six-speed gearbox driving a final belt. The 10.7:1 compression ratio and four valves per cylinder betray a decidedly modern design. Against a Harley Sportster S or a Honda Rebel 1100, the Scout plays in a league of its own: neither full-blown power-cruiser nor classic custom, it plows its own furrow. Those shopping for a used Indian Scout or a custom Indian Scout Bobber will find an active secondary market—proof that the model has built lasting loyalty.
The cast-aluminum frame is a genuine surprise in this segment. The 1,576 mm wheelbase remains generous, the seat drops to 649 mm, and the dry weight of 245 kg (261 kg wet) places this American among the lightweights of its class. The telescopic fork and pair of rear shocks get the job done without fanfare. On the braking front, expectations are left wanting: a single front disc clamped by a two-piston caliper, a single rear disc with a single-piston caliper. Optional ABS partly makes up for this frugality, but on a machine listed at €15,190, you'd expect it as standard. The 130/90-16 and 150/80-16 tire fitment favors agility over muscular stance. The 12.5-liter tank demands frequent stops—a recurring shortcoming for Indian on this model.

The Scout range has been cleverly expanded over the years. The Indian Scout Bobber, the Indian Scout Sixty, the Indian Scout Rogue, the Bobber Twenty: each variant targets a different rider profile. The Indian Scout customization potential is real, with the brand offering a substantial accessories catalog. Available in A2-compliant trim since 2017 with a barely noticeable six-horsepower reduction, it also knows how to appeal to newer license holders. Successive updates—cartridge fork in 2018, revised braking in 2020, USB port in 2019—show a manufacturer that listens to real-world feedback.
The Scout is aimed at the rider who wants character without sacrificing performance, style without giving up modernity. It tops out at 200 km/h, which is more than enough for its intended purpose. With 145 mm of ground clearance and 31 degrees of available lean angle, it even holds its own on twisty roads. Its true rival may not be a Harley but rather the Triumph Bonneville Bobber, which plays on the same turf of reimagined heritage. The Scout has a more powerful engine and a more rigorous chassis in its favor. Working against it are timid braking and a stingy tank. The €15,190 price tag places it in the upper-middle range of the segment, but the pride of riding an Indian—that little extra soul missing from Japanese offerings—is well worth a few euros more.
