Overview
Can an American motorcycle truly play the adventurer without seeming like an imposter? With the FTR Rally, Indian attempts the gamble, grafting an urban explorer look onto a base that remains fundamentally a robust roadster. It’s not a true scrambler, nor a trail machine, but it cultivates a rugged style that appeals to the eye. The real heart of the matter is this 1203 cc V-twin engine, delivering 125 horsepower, a rare power output in the landscape of American customs, more accustomed to torrents of torque than high RPMs. With 117.9 Nm of torque available, it has what it takes to pull its affirmed weight of 236 kg, fully fueled, with a certain authority.

Compared to a Triumph Scrambler 1200, more accomplished in its all-terrain versatility, the Indian is clearly positioned as a tarmac machine in disguise. The 19 and 18-inch spoked rims and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires are signs of intention rather than tools for conquest. They offer reassuring grip in the wet and on degraded roads, but don’t imagine setting off on a rocky hike. The test of the Indian FTR Rally confirms this impression: it is on the winding road that it makes most sense. The riding position, raised by a ProTaper handlebar, is relaxed, and the seat height of 815 mm remains accessible while providing a good view.
The real evolution for the year 2023 lies in its electronic equipment. The dashboard is now a 4-inch touchscreen TFT display, piloting the RideCommand system with integrated navigation. Three riding modes, traction control managed by an inertial measurement unit, and cornering ABS assist the rider. Brembo brakes, front and rear, offer bite without fail. For a price approaching 17,190 euros, this equipment is within the standard, but it places the FTR Rally in the realm of technological roadsters, far from the mechanical purity of some rivals.
The target audience? An urban wanderer seeking character, seduced by the flat track aesthetics and the growl of the V2, but who will rarely leave the asphalt. It’s a motorcycle for those who want to stand out in an ocean of neo-retro bikes, without sacrificing modern performance and comfort. Lovers of raw sensations may find the whole thing a little too polished, but for daily use tinged with escape, it makes a strong impression. Whether considering a new purchase or a used Indian FTR Rally, it is important to keep in mind that its 12.9-liter fuel tank somewhat limits autonomy for long raids.
Ultimately, the Indian FTR Rally is a compelling and consistent proposition. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but it brings a unique personality, successfully combining American heritage and current technologies. It’s a motorcycle with character, perfect for those seeking to combine an adventurous look and road agility, without ever really getting their boots dirty.
