Overview
They call it *Rally*, dress it with knobby tires and a high handlebar, but who would be crazy enough to unleash this Indian on a real trail? Asking the question is already having the answer. The *Indian FTR Rally* is not an adventurer, it’s a statement of intent, a roadster dressed as an off-roader to seduce the urban dweller in search of originality. Its true playground is the tarmac, slightly damaged country roads, and above all, the gaze of others.

Beneath its scrambler disguise beats the most modern heart ever grafted by Indian. This 1203 cm3 V2 is a pleasant surprise, with 123 horsepower that remind you that the brand has known how to break free from its historical torpor. The torque is there, frank and massive, with 117.9 Nm arriving without fuss in the mid-range. On the road, this gives a lively motorcycle, which responds with a satisfying growl, far from the placidity of traditional American big twins. This engine is the number one argument of this *Indian FTR Rally test*: it gives it a sporty roadster character, capable of holding its own against a Triumph Street Scrambler 1200, which is much heavier and more traditional.
The chassis, with its exposed tubular frame, plays the game of agility. At a standstill, the announced 240 kg are felt, but once launched, the *FTR Rally 2022* proves surprisingly maneuverable. The inverted fork and Brembo radial brakes at the front inspire confidence. The position, thanks to this raised ProTaper handlebar and the 815 mm seat, is relaxed and perfect for the city or casual rides. However, don't be fooled by the spoked rims and *Scorpion Rally STR* tires: the 170 mm ground clearance and the lack of serious protections will quickly remind you that the path must remain clean. It’s a style, a state of mind, not a function.
And that’s the point. With an *Indian FTR Rally price* approaching 15,000 euros, one is entitled to expect a certain versatility. It offers it, but in a very urban and road register. The equipment is correct: cruise control, USB port, ABS, and even cylinder deactivation at idle for 2022. But faced with a Ducati DesertX, much more capable off-road, or even a BMW R nineT Scrambler more accomplished, the positioning of the Indian is clear: it is the motorcycle of uncompromising style, for those who want a modern, lively and atypical custom. For real travel, it is better to look at a standard *used Indian FTR Rally* and invest in luggage.
Ultimately, the *Indian FTR Rally* is a magnificent oxymoron. It borrows the codes of adventure to better celebrate the road. It is a motorcycle with character, ideal for those who are fueled by looks and sensations in the city or on winding roads, but who do not indulge in illusions about forest trails. A charmer, not a globetrotter.
