Overview

Who said a cruiser had to gleam with a thousand chromes to command respect? Since 2016, the Indian Chief Dark Horse has taken the exact opposite approach to that philosophy. Where the Chief Classic plays the gleaming heritage card, the Dark Horse plunges everything into black. Tank, fenders, engine, wheels, fork: every surface has been dipped in darkness. Only the exhaust headers and a few pinstripes on the V-twin's cooling fins still dare to reflect light. The result is radical, almost menacing. And that's precisely the point.

Indian Chief Dark Horse

But this Indian Chief Dark Horse is more than just a cosmetic treatment. Indian took the opportunity to trim the fat. Gone are the auxiliary lights, the passenger platform, and a few superfluous accessories: the scales read 341 kg dry, a full 13 kilos less than the Chief Classic. The spoke wheels give way to cast designs, more modern, more aggressive. The whole thing rides on 130/90-16 tires up front and 180/65-16 at the rear. With a seat set at just 660 mm off the ground, the riding position is low, very low. Even a modest-sized rider will plant both feet flat without hesitation. It's a deliberate choice for a pure-bred custom, built for cruising, not for carving through twisties.

Between the floorboards sits the ThunderStroke 111, a 49° V-twin displacing 1811 cc that doesn't do things by halves. At 74 hp, the power output remains modest. That's not where this machine makes its case. Torque, on the other hand, hits 138 Nm from just 2600 rpm. At that engine speed, the motor pulls like a freight train, and every roll of the throttle comes with that deep rumble characteristic of big American twins. The 6-speed gearbox sends it all through a belt drive—quiet and maintenance-free. Top speed caps out at 180 km/h, which is more than enough for the intended program. If you're looking for a rocket, look elsewhere.

Indian Chief Dark Horse

The cast aluminum frame houses a 46 mm telescopic hydraulic fork with 119 mm of travel and a rear mono-shock limited to 94 mm. Braking duties fall to dual 300 mm discs gripped by 4-piston calipers up front and a single disc of the same diameter with a 2-piston caliper at the rear. ABS comes standard, which answers a common question about the Indian Chief Dark Horse. Cruise control and keyless ignition round out a solid spec sheet for a machine priced at €22,600 in 2016. Against a Harley-Davidson Fat Bob or a Victory Gunner from the same era, the Indian Chief Dark Horse price remained competitive, especially considering the bike served as an ideal platform for customization. With roughly forty references in the accessories catalog, every owner could steer their machine toward a bobber style, a full-on custom look, or simply double down on the dark side.

Whether we're talking about the Indian Chief Dark Horse 2018, 2019, 2020, or the 2021 and 2022 model years that brought a new chassis and a revised engine, the recipe has never changed: a stripped-down, blacked-out, and accessible platform designed for custom enthusiasts who want to impose their own vision. On the used market, the Dark Horse holds a strong resale value, proof that the concept found its audience. A single Indian Chief Dark Horse test ride is usually all it takes to decide: either the slow rhythm of the big twin puts you under its spell, or you move on. There's no half-measure with this machine. It's a motorcycle with character, built to devour asphalt straight ahead, eyes hidden behind dark glasses. Nothing more, nothing less.
