Overview
Who would have bet that Indian would one day take a saw to its own legend to create something radically new? Yet that's exactly the turn embodied by the 2024 Indian Chief Dark Horse, a machine that breaks away from the plush cruiser of old to adopt a scalpel-sharp bobber silhouette. Gone are the sweeping fenders, gone the generous chrome, gone the statutory bulk. The Indian Chief Dark Horse has shed nearly 44 kilos compared to the previous generation and tips the scales at 304 kg wet. This strict diet is visible at first glance: a tank reduced to 15 liters that seems to float above the frame, a mercilessly chopped rear fender, and a seat shaved down to 662 mm off the ground. Indian is no longer playing the nostalgia card; the brand is going head-to-head with Harley-Davidson on the modern custom battlefield, the territory of Fat Bobs and Sportster S models.

Beneath this minimalist bodywork still beats the Thunderstroke, an 1890 cc V-twin that forms the vibrant heart of the lineup. The numbers speak for themselves: 90 horsepower and, more importantly, 161 Nm of torque available from just 2,900 rpm. This two-valve-per-cylinder engine, with a 103.2 mm bore, 113 mm stroke, and an 11:1 compression ratio, favors muscular low-end pull over high-rpm theatrics. Since 2023, a revised clutch delivers lighter lever effort and noticeably smoother shifts through the six-speed gearbox. The belt final drive remains a smart choice for maintenance and quiet operation. Don't go chasing the claimed 180 km/h top speed—that's not the point. The pleasure lives in the fat of the torque curve, that frank shove that plants you firmly in the saddle the moment you exit a corner.
The chassis has also been thoroughly rethought. The old cast-aluminum frame gives way to a tubular steel structure, while the wheelbase shortens noticeably to 1,626 mm. The result: the Chief Dark Horse feels livelier on corner entry, more playful through sequences of bends than its predecessor ever was. The telescopic fork and twin rear shocks with adjustable preload get the job done without pretending to rival a European roadster's chassis, but the 124 mm of ground clearance is enough to have fun on twisty roads without scraping the footpegs at the first roundabout. Braking relies on dual floating discs up front and a single disc at the rear, all backed by standard ABS. Yes, the Indian Chief Dark Horse does come with ABS—a reassuring point on a machine of this size.

Where this American custom truly surprises is in its electronic equipment. Behind its custom-shop appearance, it hides a 4-inch circular Ride Command touchscreen TFT display, compatible with GPS, Bluetooth, and call management. Three riding modes—Tour, Standard, and Sport—adjust throttle response to suit the mood of the moment. Add in keyless ignition, cruise control, and the adaptive headlight borrowed from the FTR, and you get a technological package that few custom competitors offer at this price point. Because that's where the real battle lies: at 19,390 euros, the 2024 Indian Chief Dark Horse positions itself squarely against the Harley Fat Bob 114 and above the Honda CMX1100 Rebel, with a displacement and torque advantage that's hard to argue with. Those looking for a used Indian Chief Dark Horse, particularly the 2021 or 2022 model years, will find softer prices for a full-scale test of this renewed philosophy. The Chief is no longer a relic; it's a statement of intent for custom enthusiasts who want character without giving up modernity.
