Overview
We’ve seen it shine brightly on world circuits, but a bit lazy in the hands of the average rider. The first VTR SP-1, despite its triumphs in Superbike and Endurance, struggled to convince on the road and on private tracks, overwhelmed by its weight and sometimes nervous handling. So, when Honda unveiled the SP-2 in 2002, the message was clear: it was time to clean house. The question of the price of a 2002 Honda VTR SP-2 RC 51 was already being asked at the time, around €15,300, a sum that demanded results to match.

The transformation goes far beyond a simple facelift. The chassis is tightened, the masses are centered, and the swingarm is lightened and stiffened. As a result, the beast loses 5 kg on the scale and gains radical agility. The 138 horsepower of the V-twin, 4 more than the previous model, don't perform the miracle alone. It’s the whole package that becomes coherent. The front end guides with surgical precision, the traction is exemplary, and the ground clearance, finally correct, allows you to fully exploit phenomenal braking. Scraping and rear wheel lockup are a thing of the past; the SP-2 begins to obey at your fingertips.
On the road or on the track, it delivers a riding experience that is both exhilarating and reassuring. The V-twin is expressive, even nasty at high revs, and its 100 Nm of torque propels you out of corners with brutal authority. Compared to the Japanese four-cylinder engines of the time, which were sharper and more nervous, the RC51 plays the card of muscular power and stability. It also shares this philosophy with its great rival, the Ducati 998, which then reigned in Superbike. This is the paradox of this machine: it was born to beat Ducati on the circuits, and it succeeded, but in dealerships, it remained a niche animal, demanding and expensive.
Because that’s the flaw in the armor. Despite its gigantic improvements, the SP-2 did not crush the comparisons of the time, often ranked at the back of the grid against more versatile and accessible competitors. Its weight, still considerable at 217 kg when fully fueled, and its very committed character reserved it for experienced riders, those who seek pure sensation and the authenticity of a genuine homologated race machine. Today, its status as a legend is undeniable, and the price of a 2002 Honda VTR SP-2 RC 51 in good condition continues to increase in value. It is the archetype of the Superbike of the 2000s, a pure object of passion for lovers of charismatic mechanics and competitive history. A myth, simply.
