Overview
When Richard Mille decides to lend his name to a motorcycle, it ceases to be a matter of transportation. It becomes a manifesto. The collaboration between the Jura-based watchmaking house—whose watches regularly reach a million euros—and Brough Superior, resurrected in Toulouse with a historical connection to Nottingham, gives birth to the RMB01, a machine limited to 150 units and priced at €240,000. Roughly the price of a base-model Ferrari, before taxes. The comparison is not insignificant.

What strikes you before even looking at the figures is the absolute coherence of the approach. Brough had already pioneered this path with Aston Martin on the AMB 001 and AMB 001 Pro, track-only machines reserved for a handful of privileged individuals. Here, the alliance with Richard Mille pushes the logic even further: every visible part of the RMB01 is machined from aluminum using five-axis CNC machines, the main frame abandons the usual titanium of the range in favor of a machined aluminum structure, complemented by a forged carbon self-supporting rear frame. The open swingarm rivals the precision of a watch movement. The Fior-type fork, also hollowed to the extreme, recalls that at Brough, weight reduction is not a budgetary option but an aesthetic act. Beringer brakes complete the picture with the rigor expected at this price level.
The engine, an 88-degree V-twin with a displacement of 997 cc, produces 130 horsepower. That's 30 more than what this twin produces in its usual configurations. The displacement listed on the technical specification sheet is 997 cc when the source description mentions 979 cm3—a slight inconsistency that warrants verification. Regardless, 130 horsepower on a machine of this size represents measured power, not a watts race. This engine is particularly appreciated for how it is constructed: the cylinder head and internal parts are machined from 160 kg blocks of aluminum-magnesium alloy to retain only 23 kg of useful metal. A waste rate that would pale the face of any accountant, and which in itself summarizes the philosophy of this object. The six-speed gearbox and chain transmission connect to 120/70 tires at the front and 170/60 tires at the rear, for a top speed announced at 250 km/h.

The cockpit deserves a mention in its own right. Richard Mille has imposed his vocabulary: the dashboard borrows from the register of horological complications, with dials and finishes that evoke the manufacture of Le Locle more than a motorcycle preparation workshop. The result is spectacular; one inevitably thinks of the Bugatti Tourbillon and its on-board instruments conceived as pieces of jewelry. The half-handlebars integrate the braking and clutch systems into a single machined piece, the rims are bolted to the hub spokes according to an almost surgical principle. Only the front wings leave a shadow of doubt: functional to pin the front end at high speed, they divide stylistically and recall aerodynamic codes closer to the MotoGP paddock than to the living room of a collector.

The RMB01 is not aimed at a motorcyclist in the conventional sense of the term. Its buyer does not choose between it and a Ducati Panigale V4 R or a BMW M 1000 RR; he chooses between it and a Koons sculpture or a tourbillon chronograph. At €240,000, the question of usage hardly arises: one is in the collector's item, the status object, the mechanical artifact destined to cross time under glass or under spotlights. The 150 owners know it. And it is probably the only criticism that can be leveled at this machine: it is too beautiful to ride, and too expensive for us to really care.
