Overview
We all remember the SP-1, that superbike with a strong personality that made so many dream in the catalog and could be so demanding once the tires were warm. A war machine, certainly, but one that demanded a warrior rider to tame it. In 2002, Honda cleaned house and served up the VTR SP-2, a profoundly revised version that has little in common with its capricious predecessor. The objective was clear: to civilize the beast without taking away its competitor's soul, and the result is a concentrate of HRC technology that is finally accessible.

The transformation is radical. Honda shortened the wheelbase, centered the masses, and installed a lighter and stiffer swingarm. The aluminum twin-spar frame, still present, gains in precision. As a result, the SP-2 loses 5 kg on the scale, displaying 194 kg dry, and gains above all agility that was sorely lacking in the first version. The 43 mm inverted fork and the single shock absorber now offer a clear dialogue with the road. Unnecessary scraping is a thing of the past; the ground clearance is finally worthy of a sportbike. The braking system, with its two 320 mm discs at the front, is of phenomenal efficiency, offering a precise pivot point for attacking curves.
Under the 18-liter fuel tank, the 999 cm³ V-twin has also been reworked. It develops 138 horsepower, or 4 more, and a torque of 100 Nm available from 8000 rpm. The difference is not just seen on paper. The engine is more expressive, more vicious in the high revs, between 8000 and 10500 rpm. Traction is exemplary, allowing you to exit the corner with a stunning assurance, the chain transmitting the power without betraying. It is a machine that obeys at your fingertips and at your eye, allowing you to increase the pace and improvise, even in blind corners. A lightning progression compared to the SP-1.
However, at the time, the SP-2 did not crush the comparisons. Faced with more radical and lighter competitors, it sometimes arrived at the back of the grid. Its flaw? Probably its overly polished character, too civilized for pure track riders, and its price. Because that's where the shoe pinches: with a price tag approaching 15310 euros at its launch, it required a significant investment. Today, wondering what the price of a Honda VTR SP-2 RC 51 2002 is on the used market is like searching for a nugget. It is a motorcycle apart, which will seduce the enlightened collector or the sporty touring rider looking for a machine with a unique character, an undeniable image of a Superbike winner. It makes no compromises, but it asks one of you: to tame it to reveal the full extent of its thrilling capabilities.
