Overview

I was still in middle school when it happened. Dr. Alban was playing everywhere, people were humming «It’s my life» while a rumble was shaking up the sportbike sector. The CBR 900 RR had just arrived and changed the game. A large engine in a much lighter frame than the leaders of the time. The Fireblade handed a thrashing to all the competition. It would take the R1 to dethrone it.

It’s been three decades this year. Honda is recalling it with this special series of CBR 1000 RR-R SP 30th Anniversary. The designers dug out the old stock of slides to trace the colors of 1992 on this 2022 limited edition. The copy goes so far as to color the passenger seat blue. It’s striking; and moreover, it doesn’s feel dated.

Small details allow you to appreciate this jump in time. 30th Anniversary logos are inscribed on the tank cap and the SmartKey contact module. The tribute is also present on the Akrapovic silencer. The laser-engraved serial number takes its place on the upper steering stem.

Another nod to the first Fireblade, the production. The CBR 1000 RR-R SP 30th Anniversary will be manufactured in 893 units. Where does this enigmatic number come from? Let’s delve into the technical aspects to remember that it is the displacement of the 900 CBR being celebrated here. Honda extracted 124 horsepower at the time.

From the first to the latest generation, things have changed a lot. The machine and the riding position have become more radical; the power has almost doubled; the electronics have gone from the Stone Age to space exploration; the chassis is almost at the level of a Superbike machine; the sleekness of the silhouette would be a culture shock… in the same relentless pursuit that never stops.

The CBR reserves a final wink when it is started. The TFT dashboard introduces a short «Ring of Fire» cinematic. A promise that after this third of a century, the Fireblade still has the desire to rev the tachometer.
