Overview

Fifty candles for BMW's Motorsport division, and it's a two-wheeled sportbike blowing out the cake. The BMW M 1000 RR 50 Years M edition arrives in 2022 draped in a loud yellow dubbed "Sao Paulo Yellow", a color borrowed from the M4 Competition coupé. A bold choice when you consider that the historic M department colors, the famous blue, azure, and red tricolor, already dress the standard version. A decision had to be made, and BMW cut straight to the chase. The result is divisive, inevitably. But nobody can ignore this machine in a parking lot.

BMW M 1000 RR 50 Years M édition

Beneath the carbon-clad fairing, the 999 cc inline four-cylinder spits out 212 horsepower at 14,500 rpm and 112.8 Nm of torque at 11,000 rpm. Figures that place this Bavarian on par with the best Japanese blades and the Ducati Panigale V4. The 13.5:1 compression ratio and an ultra-short bore-and-stroke of 80 x 49.7 mm betray an engine designed to climb through the revs with the appetite of a prototype. The claimed top speed of 315 km/h is no hollow marketing argument: the M 1000 RR serves as the homologation base for the Superbike World Championship. That says everything about the level of demands.

Compared to the S 1000 RR from which it derives, this M version reworks the blueprint in depth. Refined frame geometry, aerodynamics honed with carbon winglets, beefed-up braking via 320 mm discs with radial mounting and four-piston calipers. The weight, 192 kg wet and 170 kg dry, remains contained for such a well-equipped machine. The 45 mm inverted fork and mono-shock offer short travel, 120 and 118 mm respectively, typical of a sportbike built for the track. The onboard electronics leave nothing out: bi-directional quickshifter, traction control, anti-wheelie, engine braking management, cornering ABS, seven riding modes, launch control, and even cruise control for highway transfers between track days.

The 50 Years M edition doesn't settle for commemorative paint. It packs the full M Competition package: CNC-machined folding levers, adjustable footpegs, machined engine guards, a lightened swingarm, a reinforced M chain, and generous carbon trim covering the fenders, tank panels, chain guard, and fairing returns. The GPS Laptrigger for recording lap times confirms the machine's track-focused calling. A seat cowl matching the yellow livery completes the picture, even though a passenger kit is still included for the optimists.

At 38,870 euros, the bill stings seriously. BMW doesn't communicate a limited number of units, and no engraved serial number justifies any claim of rarity. What you're paying for here is the sum of premium equipment and the prestige of the Motorsport badge. Against a Panigale V4 S or a Kawasaki ZX-10RR, the performance-to-price ratio holds up, but you have to own it. This M 1000 RR 50 Years M targets demanding trackday riders and brand collectors, those who want the pinnacle of the BMW catalog without going through an aftermarket tuner. An enthusiast's machine, not a beginner's, with a seat perched at 832 mm and a character that forgives nothing from sloppy riders.
