Overview
What could possibly drive Honda to rework a bike that already dominated the starting gates? The answer lies in a few numbers and a typically Japanese obsession with detail. The 2019 Honda CRF450R doesn't revolutionize anything, but it hones every parameter with surgical precision. Its 449 cc single-cylinder produces 62 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 48 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm—figures noticeably up from the previous year thanks to meticulous work on the cylinder head, intake, and exhaust system. All without sacrificing low-end tractability, which remains the true hallmark of this Unicam engine. Tim Gajser, MXGP World Champion on this platform, wasn't fooled: the 2019 Honda CRF450R is a competition weapon barely disguised as a production bike.

The centerpiece of this evolution is hidden in the onboard electronics. A three-mode Launch Control, directly inspired by HRC's factory machines, lets every rider find their ideal start setting. The softest mode limits revs to 8,250 rpm for slippery conditions or less experienced riders, while expert mode unleashes the engine up to 9,500 rpm for the most aggressive holeshots. Add to that a gear-position sensor that adjusts the ignition map based on the speed selected on the 5-speed gearbox, and you get a level of sophistication that the Yamaha YZ450F or the Kawasaki KX450, sold at roughly the same price, struggle to match on this specific point. The EMSB button on the handlebar also lets you toggle between three engine characters: balanced, progressive, or aggressive. Simple, effective.
On the chassis side, the aluminum twin-spar frame retains its architecture but sheds weight thanks to redesigned swingarm brackets and footpegs lightened by 20%. The result: 107.6 kg dry, or roughly 110 kg wet with the small 6.3-liter titanium tank. On a motocross track, every gram counts, and Honda knows it. The 49 mm Showa inverted fork, derived from the factory kit supplied to official Japanese teams, receives new spring rates and revised hydraulic settings for improved responsiveness. The rear mono-shock benefits from a "Super Finish" surface treatment and modified Pro-Link ratios that smooth out behavior at the end of stroke. Braking also gains in feel with a new asymmetric twin-piston front caliper, lighter, paired with a 260 mm petal disc. The adjustable Renthal Fatbar handlebar with four positions rounds out the package and allows the ergonomics to be tailored to all body types—a real advantage on a seat perched 960 mm off the ground.
Then there's the question of price. At 9,499 euros, the 2019 Honda CRF450R sits neck and neck with its Japanese rivals. The YZ450F carries nearly identical pricing and also offers advanced electronics, but Honda's level of finish and the legendary reliability of this engine are strong arguments. This is not a beginner's bike, despite the Launch Control that may reassure novices. It is above all a competition tool designed for the regular rider—the one who lines up for regional or national rounds and wants a solid, endlessly adjustable platform capable of absorbing hours of riding without complaint. Honda perfected its recipe without tearing everything apart, and that's exactly what the track demanded.
