Overview
Thirty-one motos won out of thirty-eight contested. When you put those numbers on the table, you begin to grasp the magnitude of what Jeffrey Herlings accomplished in 2018 in the FIM MXGP World Championship. A fractured collarbone mid-season, an express return to the bike, and fourteen consecutive double-moto victories to claim his first world title in the 450cc class. KTM, true to its tradition of commemorative special editions, logically followed up with a replica version of the Dutchman's machine, available in limited quantities from January 2019 at European dealers.

At 100 kg dry, with a 449.90cc single-cylinder producing 63 horsepower, a generous 95 mm bore and 63.4 mm stroke, this 450 SX-F Herlings Replica is built on the proven architecture of the production model. But the real appeal lies elsewhere. KTM dressed up this edition with an Akrapovic silencer that lets the single-cylinder breathe freely, a Hinson clutch cover, Factory wheels with anodized hubs, a Factory fork crown and a Dalla Valle seat. The 48 mm WP inverted fork with 310 mm of travel and the rear mono-shock with 300 mm of stroke take care of the rest when absorbing the bumps of Lommel or Mantova. All of this for €11,190 — a significant premium over the standard version, justified by the factory-fitted equipment level.
What truly sets this machine apart from a standard 450 SX-F is the coherence of the package on offer. The factory holeshot device mounted on the fork, the composite skid plate, the orange sprocket, the frame in the same color: everything works together to stay as close as possible to Herlings' race bike. The Red Bull KTM graphics kit with the champion's personalized design puts the whole thing in context. This is no longer just a sticker kit, but a machine that leaves the dealership with a level of preparation that other brands charge for as optional accessories. Compared to a Yamaha YZ450F or a Honda CRF450R of the same era, the KTM takes the plug-and-play competition approach without compromise.
The 7-liter tank and 4-speed gearbox are a reminder that this is a tool built purely for competition, with an 950 mm seat height that rules out shorter riders or easily intimidated beginners. This motorcycle targets a specific audience: the accomplished amateur racer, or even the regional-level rider, looking to compete on a platform close to Factory-spec machinery without assembling the bike themselves piece by piece. It is also a collector's piece for fans of the rider, with the limited production run mechanically reinforcing its long-term value.
The only reservation concerns the 25CrMo4 steel frame, whose 12.75:1 compression ratio reflects an uncompromising performance intent, but which demands precise fueling and rigorous maintenance to hold up over time. You don't buy a Herlings Replica to ride on Sunday trail rides. You buy it to win races — or to remind everyone around you that in 2018, a 24-year-old Dutchman brought the entire world competition to its knees despite an injury that would have derailed anyone else.
