Overview
Fifty years. Half a century of carving trails into the dirt of race tracks around the world. That is the weight of history that this Yamaha YZ 450 F “50th Anniversary” carries on its shoulders, or rather, on its aluminum frame. At nearly €11,000, it is more than just a race machine; it is a rolling piece of heritage, dressed in a white, purple, and pink livery that directly echoes the glorious 90s. A retro style that shines in the sun, for a motorcycle resolutely focused on victory.

Beneath this commemorative finish beats the heart of a completely redesigned competition beast in 2023. Yamaha took a gamble on effective simplicity: rather than a deluge of electronic gadgets, engineers refined the essentials. The 450 cm³ single-cylinder engine gains compactness and responsiveness, with a revised air intake and a redline raised by 500 rpm. The announced 59 horsepower are released with exemplary linearity, and the 5% power gain is immediately felt when opening the throttle. The real feat is the lightness. At 109 kg fully fueled, with its 6.2 liters of gasoline, it sets a benchmark in the category. It is nearly two and a half kilos lighter than the previous generation, a difference you will feel in every change of direction.
This agility is the result of a "rider-centric" philosophy. The aluminum frame has been reworked to offer a perfect balance between rigidity and feedback, while the flatter seat and refined bodywork allow for more instinctive body transfers. The inverted fork and single shock benefit from new settings, and the five-speed transmission has been refined for more precise gear changes. Yamaha even slipped in a three-mode traction control system and a launch control system, discreet but valuable aids to keep the motorcycle in line when the track becomes slippery.
Who is it for? Clearly for the demanding motocross rider, whether amateur or professional, who is looking for the ultimate weapon for the starting line. Its handling and progressive power make it more accessible than one might think for a good rider, but its temperament remains that of a pure race machine. Compared to a KTM 450 SX-F or a Husqvarna FC 450, often cited as references, the Yamaha plays the card of balance and pure feel, rather than technological escalation. What is its weakness? As with any competition motorcycle, its 6.2-liter tank and sharp character almost exclusively destine it to the track. It is a performance tool, not a touring motorcycle.
Ultimately, this anniversary edition is much more than just a paint job. It is the synthesis of five decades of motocross know-how, embodied in a modern, formidable, and surprisingly agile machine. It proves that to progress, you sometimes have to know how to refocus on the essentials: the perfect dialogue between the rider and the machine. A dialogue that, on this YZ 450 F, resembles a high-level conversation.
