Overview
Sixty years after the first YA-1, does Yamaha still need to prove anything when it comes to motocross? This YZ 450 F 60th Anniversary edition answers that question with a powerful argument: style. It’s not just a track machine; it’s a rolling tribute, an assumed nod to the brand’s competition heritage. The famous yellow and black speedblock, made iconic by the 2006 R1, dresses this 112 kg fighting machine, and the effect is immediate. It doesn’t go unnoticed, even when stationary.

Under the evocative plastics, the mechanics remain those of a champion. The 449.7 cm3 single-cylinder engine, with its square bore and four valves, is a benchmark for power delivery. For 2016, engineers revised the camshafts and reworked the electronic management, offering simplified reprogramming via the Yamaha Power Tuner control unit supplied as standard. A valuable tool for adapting the engine’s character to every terrain, from deep sand to hard terrain. The chassis has also evolved, with a new fork offset and refined suspension settings to gain precision.
The special equipment of this limited series sets the tone. The Akrapovic silencer, the clutch cover, and the GYTR handguards are not just for show. They signal a motorcycle designed to be used, and even pushed. The electronic start control system (LCS) is there to avoid silly stalls at the gate, while the enlarged 270 mm front disc and revised clutch promise to keep pace in extreme conditions. With its 7.5-liter fuel tank and a seat height of 96.5 cm, it retains the DNA of a pure competitor, physically demanding.
Who is it really aimed at? Clearly not a beginner. This €9,299 jewel targets the experienced motocrosser, the one who seeks ultimate performance but also a dose of exclusivity in his garage. Faced with a KTM 450 SX-F or a Husqvarna FC 450, the Yamaha plays the card of heritage and emotion, in addition to brute efficiency. It’s a machine that speaks to history as much as it does to adrenaline. Its biggest flaw? Perhaps being too beautiful to be sacrificed in the brambles. But it is precisely this paradox that makes its charm: a work of art designed to be abused, a tribute that only lives at full throttle.
