Overview

When Suzuki drew its GSX-R 1000 at the turn of the millennium, the small world of Japanese hypersports shook to its foundations. Honda, founding father of the "lightweight big sportbike" concept since the Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade 1992, couldn't just stand by. The answer came in the form of this Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade 2003, the ultimate evolution of a lineage born with the SC33 and refined through the 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 generations. A motorcycle that pushes the envelope one notch further without betraying the "Total Control" DNA so dear to Tadao Baba.

Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade

Beneath the bodywork with its taut lines and a now frankly menacing face, the inline four-cylinder gained displacement. With 954 cc, a 75 mm bore, 54 mm stroke and an 11.5:1 compression ratio, the engine delivers 151 hp at 11,250 rpm and 105 Nm of torque at 9,500 rpm. Reprogrammed fuel injection with a faster ECU and lighter pistons correct a known flaw of the 929, which never truly reached its claimed power figures on paper. The result? An engine with a fuller midrange, sharper on the throttle, capable of propelling the 168 kg dry weight to 277 km/h. Against the Suzuki, Honda's powerplant doesn't play the brute force card. It banks on a more progressive, more usable power delivery. A choice that speaks equally to the track rider and the one stringing together back roads on weekends.

The aluminum twin-spar frame, already recognized as a benchmark, was stiffened around the steering head. The 18-liter fuel tank, shortened, brings the rider closer to the front end and centralizes mass. The centerpiece remains the swingarm, shared with the VTR SP-2: longer, stiffer and lighter than its predecessor. A component worthy of a race machine. The Pro-Link system now offers the ability to adjust ride height without touching the suspension settings, a detail that betrays genuine track ambitions. The 43 mm inverted fork with 120 mm of travel completes a coherent package, served by 120/70-17 tires at the front and 190/50-17 at the rear.

On the road, the Fireblade 954 proves paradoxical. Sharper than the 929 in direction changes, it has surrendered a fraction of stability. When the pace is seriously raised, the fork reaches its limits a little sooner than on the previous generation. In aggressive track use, the suspension can find itself overwhelmed where the older model took the punishment without flinching. The compromise remains remarkable nonetheless. With its 815 mm seat height, acceptable comfort for the class and a full instrument panel integrating the H.I.S.S. immobilizer system, this Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade retains a versatility that neither the R1 nor the GSX-R can claim. It even accepts a small piece of luggage under the seat, which counts as a luxury in this category.

Listed at 12,999 euros when new at the time, the Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade 2003 now trades at around 3,490 euros on the used market, a price that makes it one of the best thrills-per-euro ratios in the used sportbike market. It targets the experienced rider looking for a high-performance machine without the unforgiving nature of a pure track weapon. Less radical than its rivals, more approachable in its behavior, it demands less technical skill to exploit. It's the sportbike for the smart rider, the one who knows that speed only makes sense when you have it under control.
