Overview
One would almost look for it in the Harley-Davidson catalog, this one. In 2011, releasing a Sportster with such a radical, almost punk look, was a bold gamble. The XR 1200 X is the story of a manufacturer pushing one of its iconic models to its limits, on the tenuous border between custom and sport. It’s far removed from flashy chrome and relaxed lines. Here, everything is black, taut, ready to pounce. It's not a motorcycle that waits patiently in front of the café; it’s a motorcycle that makes you want to scrape along the back alleys and look for the apex in roundabouts.

Beneath this urban warrior look lies a well-known heart: the 1203 cm3 Evolution V-Twin. But what a radical treatment! The engineers brought out the complete toolbox: more aggressive camshafts, a free-flowing intake and exhaust, and even the nasty crankshaft from the Buell XB-12R lends a hand. The result is a shock: 91 horsepower at 7000 rpm, nearly 20 more than a standard Sportster. The torque, meanwhile, remains a monster of 98 Nm, available from 3700 rpm, ready to tear up the asphalt. You can feel that this engine was *enraged* deliberately, transforming a routine mechanism into a brutal and sonorous ball of energy.
To channel this fury, Milwaukee finally opened the purse strings. Farewell to soft, purely decorative suspensions, hello to a fully adjustable 43 mm Showa inverted fork and piggyback rear shocks of the same caliber. Braking also moves up a gear with four-piston Nissin calipers and 292 mm discs at the front. For a Harley, that's serious. The stiffened double cradle frame and tires in 120 at the front and 180 at the rear confirm the sporty intention. With 260 kg fully fueled, it's not a featherweight, but its low center of gravity and engaging riding position prevent it from feeling sluggish.
So, who is this black beast for? Clearly not for novices, let alone touring riders seeking comfort. The 13-liter tank dictates frequent stops, and the 795 mm seat, while reasonable, doesn't invite long journeys. The XR 1200 X is the perfect weapon of the urban adventurer who understands that the custom spirit can rhyme with agility. It's a motorcycle with character, demanding, that asks you to tame it. At over 12,000 euros at the time, it was a bold bet. A Sportster that doesn't do lace, an American that dares to look towards European streetfighters. A fascinating UFO, and proof that Harley, sometimes, knows how to surprise even the most skeptical.
