Overview
Can a motorcycle be both an immutable icon and undergo a subtle makeover each year? The Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom CA, in its 2016 version, answers this question with a pragmatism tinged with nostalgia. You don't revolutionize a myth, you apply a bit of polish to it. This model, like its cousins from 2013 or 2015, remains faithful to the Sportster DNA: a steel double cradle frame that speaks of robustness, a 17-liter tank with classic lines, and this low seat at 725 mm that invites all builds to settle in. But beneath this apparent permanence, the Custom CA cultivates its particularities. The drag-bar handlebars, the recentered controls, and the five-spoke polished rims give it a more aggressive posture, a nod to the dragster culture without sacrificing ergonomics for the urban rider or the dilettante globetrotter.

The heart of the machine is still this 45° V-twin of 1202 cc, the famous Evolution II. With 75 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a torque of 96 Nm available from 3750 rpm, it does not seek explosive performance. Its strength lies elsewhere: in this feeling of constant propulsion, in this characteristic purring that vibrates the frame. Compared to a Japanese or European twin of the same displacement, it seems almost lazy on paper. But on the road, it is this progressive delivery of power that seduces, an engine to be savored rather than pressed. You have to accept a top speed of around 175 km/h and a somewhat rustic five-speed gearbox, but that is the price of a mechanical system that breathes tradition.
Harley has also known how to graft necessary improvements without betraying the spirit. Since 2014, braking has gained credibility with standard ABS, a 300 mm front disc, and revised calipers. This is a welcome evolution for a vehicle weighing 268 kg fully fueled, even if braking remains less incisive than that of a modern competitor. The suspensions, a 39 mm fork and two lateral shock absorbers, are configured for leisurely riding rather than cornering attack. This Sportster 1200 Custom CA, with its price of 12,590 euros, does not target the track rider or the technophile. It is aimed at those who want a silhouette recognizable among a thousand, a charismatic engine, and the possibility of customizing endlessly. It is a base, a style platform with more pronounced special finishes, like this Amber Whiskey and Vivid Black color scheme that succeeds the famous Candy Orange of previous years.
Ultimately, this machine is a living paradox. It offers modest figures, a significant weight, and technology that seems frozen in the 1990s. But it sells an emotion, a status, and an aesthetic freedom that few competitors can offer. For a beginner looking for an easy motorcycle with a strong image, or for a veteran desiring a simple and evocative mount, the XL Sportster 1200 Custom CA remains a relevant choice. It will not convince on the technical specifications, but it often seduces at first glance and at the first purr of its engine, an argument that figures cannot quantify.
