Overview

So here it is, a truly Harley dilemma: how to be more aggressive, more menacing, without turning your Sportster into an unsellable tractor? In 2011, Milwaukee’s answer was the Nightster, and it hit right in the eye of the biker seeking pure attitude. Forget the dazzling chrome and voluptuous curves. Here, everything is black, low, and compact. It looks like a bulldog that has swallowed an engine, ready to bite the asphalt. The bobber is clearly the inspiration, with this rear fender cropped as short as possible, this 12.5-liter tank that seems to shrink before your eyes, and this license plate exiled to the side. It’s design that speaks, that even growls, before you’ve even turned the key.

And speaking of turning it, let’s do that. The heart is the eternal and timeless 1202 cm3 Evolution V-Twin. The numbers? 75 horsepower at 6000 rpm, and especially a torque of 103 Nm available from 3200 rpm. We are far from the specs of a Japanese sportbike, but that’s the whole point. The power is slow, heavy, and deep. It doesn't knock you out; it pulls you, with that cavernous and dry sound that the specific exhausts wonderfully amplify. Even mounted on silent blocks, this engine communicates. It trembles, it lives, it reminds you with every acceleration that you are riding a mechanical part, not an appliance. At 260 kg fully fueled, the beast is not a feather, but its low center of gravity and its seat at 67.8 cm from the ground make it surprisingly maneuverable at low speed. For the city dweller who wants to show off or the Sunday traveler who prioritizes style over pure performance, it’s a massive argument.

But don't be fooled, the Nightster has its limits, and they are accepted. This radical look comes at a price. The suspensions, lowered for aesthetics, are quite basic. Past 81 mph (130 km/h), comfort flies away and handling becomes a bit floaty. The braking, with its two discs at the front and a single at the rear, does the job without more, requiring firm pressure on the lever. And this small tank? With a consumption that easily approaches 6L/100km, the 170 km of theoretical range melts like snow in the sun. It's a motorcycle for short trips, outings with friends, coffee stops. Not to swallow the highway.

Facing the competition, it stands apart. A Triumph Bonneville or a Yamaha XV950 offer more versatility and refinement. An Indian Scout, arrived later, will be much more performant. The Nightster, on the other hand, doesn't play on that ground. It sells an emotion, a status, an image of a chic rebel. At 10,000 euros at the time, it was a stylish ticket into the world of Harley. Today, as a used bike, it remains a cult object for those who want an American with a worked look, without the frills, and who accept to sacrifice a little comfort on the altar of style. It's the bad boy of the family, a bit grumpy, not always practical, but undeniably charismatic.
