Overview
So here it is, Harley releases a new Sportster and presents it to us as the bad boy of the group. The truth is that in 2007, the XL 1200N Nightster is mainly a very successful stylistic exercise, a nod to the bobbers of yesteryear designed to seduce the city dweller in search of attitude. We are far from a race machine, but very close to a rolling statement of principle. Everything is a matter of posture: seat 67.8 cm from the ground, lowered suspensions, and that omnipresent matte black that swallows the light. The truncated rear fender and the offset license plate complete its low and mean profile, like a boxer tucking his shoulders before the assault.

But don't be fooled, beneath this bad boy veneer lies the proven V-Twin Evolution engine of 1202 cm3. With 75 horsepower at 6000 rpm and, above all, 103 Nm of torque available from 3200 rpm, that's where its true character resides. It's not about seeking the rev range, but about enjoying this frank and muscular surge as soon as you twist the throttle a bit. The five-speed gearbox, coupled with the belt drive, ensures fairly abrupt gear changes but smooth and silent propulsion. We swallow the streets effortlessly, with that rough and dry sound typical of the model-specific exhaust. Yes, it vibrates, but it's a vibration that is part of the show, a mechanical signature that you buy as much as the logo on the tank.
In terms of handling, you need to keep your feet on the ground, both literally and figuratively. With its 260 kg all fueled up and a fairly short geometry, the Nightster is agile in the city and on winding roads at a moderate pace. However, don't ask for miracles in tight corners or at high speed, the 39 mm forks and the Showa double shock absorbers have their limits, and the 12.5-liter tank quickly reminds you that you are on a machine for urban rides or weekly outings, not for grand touring. The brakes, with a double disc at the front and a single at the rear, do the job without frills, provided you solicit them with a little anticipation.
Who is it for then? For the rider who wants an authentic Harley-Davidson, without the sparkling chrome of the Custom, with a dose of rebellious spirit and reassuring accessibility. It's the ideal gateway to the brand for those seeking more personality than a simple 883. Its drawback? A price that flirts with 10,000 euros, a sum for what remains, technically, a refined Sportster platform. But that's precisely its gamble: to sell an emotion, a posture, a lifestyle much more than figures on a technical specification sheet. And on this point, the Nightster, with its devilish face and urban rogue temperament, undeniably scores points.
