Overview
The Sportster, it was the entry-level model, the accessible little brother, the myth within reach. With this 1250 S, Harley-Davidson decided to wipe the slate clean and draw a thick line through six decades of heritage. We no longer speak of an entry ticket, but of a machine that directly targets the faces of European and Japanese muscle roadsters. The price, 18,590 euros, confirms it without ambiguity: we are in the register of a mature, technological motorcycle, and resolutely forward-looking. For whom? A demanding touring rider who wants character without the archaisms, or a track rider seeking an American motorcycle that doesn't forgive their mistakes. The image of a basic custom is over.

The heart of this metamorphosis is this 1252 cm3 Revolution Max engine, already proven on the Pan America but recalibrated here for the road. With 121 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 124.5 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm, it sends a monumental slap to the brand's history. It's more powerful than a large 1800 cm3 M8 twin, but the character has changed: the torque is higher in the rev range, the engine breathes and cries like a sporty block. Liquid cooling, variable distribution, double ACT, all of this smells of modern technology. Compared to a Japanese roadster like the Suzuki GSX-S1000, the Harley retains its aura of brute force, but now has the weapons to fight on the field of pure performance.
On paper, the technical specifications of this Harley-Davidson Sportster 1250 S announce the color: a chassis where the engine is a stressed member, an announced weight of 228 kg fully fueled which places it in the courtyard of roadsters, and a quality suspension with a 43 mm fully adjustable inverted Showa fork. The braking, however, is surprising in its mixed nature: a huge 4-piston Brembo radial caliper clamps a single 320 mm disc at the front, a bold choice to master over 120 horsepower. The riding position, feet forward and low handlebars, is typically custom, but the 765 mm seat remains accessible. The 11.8-liter tank, on the other hand, is a weak point for long journeys; one will quickly think of Harley-Davidson Sportster 1250 S accessories like bags to compensate for this lack.

Where the gap with the old world widens is in the electronics. This motorcycle is a veritable technological hub on two wheels. Cornering ABS, traction control sensitive to lean angle, anti-wheelie, cruise control, and no less than five riding modes, two of which are customizable. The 4-inch TFT screen is the opposite of the old needle gauges and offers complete connectivity. For a modern rider, this is a massive argument. Look for a used Harley-Davidson Sportster 1250 S 2022, and you will see that this equipment was already present, making this model a safe bet on the used market.

So, is this Sportster 1250 S a true Harley? That’s the wrong question. It’s a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that embraces its time, with the power of a roadster and the soul of a custom. It is not perfect: the range is limited, the single rear shock lacks travel, and the minimalist design will divide purists. But it brings a freshness and engagement that the brand sorely needed. It is no longer aimed at the beginner who dreamed of an Iron 883, but at the connoisseur who wants an American capable of everything, from the winding national road to the highway. A bold, and rather successful, gamble.
