Overview

Can a motorcycle truly be two machines in one? That’s the bold bet of the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide, a custom that plays on versatility with an integrated transformation kit. This is far from simple accessorizing. Here, the bat-wing fairing and saddlebags are designed to clip on and off in the blink of an eye, offering two radically different faces without sacrificing aesthetics. This is the concept of the “convertible” taken to its paroxysm, an idea that has made the success of models like the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide 2018 and which finds here a realized expression.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide

Under this transformer's cloak beats the famous Milwaukee-Eight 107, a 1746 cm3 V2 that delivers 83 horsepower and, above all, 146.5 Nm of torque from 2750 rpm. These figures, typical of a Harley engine, ensure muscular acceleration without having to torture the tachometer. The frame is the new Softail chassis, more rigid and lighter than the previous Dyna architecture, with which the Sport Glide shares its DNA. The displayed weight, 317 kg fully fueled, remains substantial, but the motorcycle proves surprisingly agile in the city once the saddlebags are removed. The 120 mm ground clearance however recalls that this is not a sportbike.

Compared to a Road King or a Street Glide, the 2021 Sport Glide positions itself as a lighter and more maneuverable option. Its less enveloping fairing and more compact saddlebags make it a light touring machine. On the highway, at a top speed of 170 km/h, the wind is more noticeable. But that’s the price to pay for this duality. For the touring rider who also wants to be able to slalom on the outskirts without the encumbrance of a cruise ship, the compromise is appealing. The announced consumption of 5 L/100 km and the 19-liter tank offer correct autonomy for long getaways.

The target audience? The customizer who refuses to specialize. The one who dreams of a Sunday ride with a naked look, then of loading their belongings for a weekend without changing mounts. At €19,190, the financial argument compared to the purchase of two separate machines is obvious. Tests of the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide often confirm this: it is a motorcycle of compromise, but an intelligent compromise. The flaws? The weight, limited protection at high speed, and a price that requires you to really exploit the versatility to justify it.

Ultimately, the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide does not claim to equal specialists. It is neither the most comfortable of touring bikes nor the most responsive of Softails. But it fuses their universes with a rare coherence. For those seeking a single motorcycle capable of doing everything, without being exceptional in any field, this transformer deserves a serious look, whether new or searching for a used Harley-Davidson Sport Glide. It is a machine of reason for a passionate person with multiple desires.
