Overview
Some collaborations feel inevitable. A Tennessee distiller whose rye whiskey runs at 80 proof, a Springfield manufacturer whose baggers run at 5,500 rpm: Indian and Jack Daniel's have established an annual ritual over the past few years, a limited series that sells out within minutes on the American market. For 2022, it's the Challenger Dark Horse raising a glass.

The shop Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, no stranger to this exercise, drew inspiration from the Rye, that amber-hued rye whiskey with its deep, burnished color. The brown and gold finish coating the bagger doesn't quite evoke a bourbon, but rather something darker, denser. The PowerPlus twin's cylinder heads receive a gold treatment, an engraved RYE badge bearing the serial number sits at the center of the 1,769 cc V. The leather seat carries the distillery's name in embroidery. The passenger floorboards, the rider footpegs, the tank: every surface becomes a canvas for branding. And on the rear fender, by way of a public service announcement: "Drive Responsibly. Bottles & Throttles. Don't mix."
Beneath this ceremonial livery hides an engine that needs no decoration to impress. The 60-degree V-twin produces 122 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, but it's the torque that truly defines the machine's character: 178 Nm arrives at 3,800 rpm, surpassing a Milwaukee-Eight 117 CVO. To find more grunt in this segment, you'd need to bolt on an S&S 2.2-liter block or swing a leg over a Triumph Rocket III. The radial four-piston Brembo brakes on twin 320 mm discs up front manage the 381 kilograms of fully loaded weight with authority proportional to the mass. The 43 mm inverted fork and electronically adjustable preload mono-shock handle the rest.
On board, Indian doesn't cut corners. The 7-inch multimedia touchscreen integrates GPS, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Pathfinder LED headlights adjust to lean angle in corners. The sound system pumps out 400 watts, double that of the standard version. The windshield is power-adjustable, the cruise control is adaptive, three riding modes are available, and traction control is paired with an IMU that manages cornering ABS. The hard saddlebags swallow 68 liters. This is American grand touring in every sense of the term, built to cross entire states without putting a foot down.

107 numbered units, $36,999 stateside, or €31,893 at the exchange rate of the time. Nine thousand dollars more than the standard Dark Horse, for an edition no serious collector would have dared pass up. Orders opened at noon Eastern time on October 21, 2021: sold out before the end of the afternoon, unsurprisingly. This kind of motorcycle isn't aimed at canyon carvers or track-day enthusiasts. It speaks to those who consider the straight road a way of life, who appreciate the object as much as the journey, and for whom a 672 mm seat height on a 381-kilogram bagger represents a perfectly reasonable compromise. A collector, a committed Americana devotee, or someone who has simply decided that luxury takes shape on two wheels.
