Overview

Can a Harley-Davidson truly be both a nimble boulevard cruiser and a comfortable touring machine, without sacrificing its style? That’s the bold gamble of the Sport Glide, a model that attempts to reconcile two often opposing worlds. With its Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine, it delivers 84 horsepower, but more importantly a massive torque of 145 Nm from 3000 rpm, a signature sound and a typically Harley push. For around €18,260 new, it positions itself as a hybrid proposition, targeting those who want a single motorcycle for the city, Sunday drives, and longer getaways.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide

The secret of this announced versatility lies in its "convertible" concept. Unlike simple accessorizing, where a windshield is often added that disfigures the lines, the Sport Glide is designed from the outset to integrate and remove its touring equipment. Its bat-wing fairing and lockable saddlebags can be removed in a few minutes, transforming the touring machine into a streamlined custom. It’s a seductive idea for those seeking a customizable Harley-Davidson Sport Glide without a factory hot rod. However, with 317 kg fully fueled, it remains an imposing machine, although its low center of gravity and 65 cm seat height make it surprisingly maneuverable at low speeds.

Compared to its counterparts, the Sport Glide occupies a common ground. It doesn't have the Road King’s kilometer appetite and integral comfort, nor the Softail Standard’s pure agility. But it borrows from both. Its revised Softail frame offers a firmer and more responsive handling than the previous generation Dyna, without rivaling a sportbike. It’s a compromise motorcycle, and that’s both its strength and its limit. The fairing, less enveloping than that of a Street Glide, and the saddlebags with modest capacity, recall that this is a lightweight touring machine, not a cruise ship.

Who is it for? Clearly for the touring Harley rider who doesn't want to be burdened by a giant Touring model, but who refuses to be tortured by the wind and lack of storage on a pure custom. It’s a long weekend motorcycle, ideal for back roads where its omnipresent torque and predictable behavior shine. On the other hand, its 19-liter tank and consumption of around 5.3 L/100 km give it correct but not exceptional range. Performance enthusiasts or those seeking long highway rides will look elsewhere.

Ultimately, the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide is an intelligent and well-executed machine, especially in its later versions such as the 2021 or 2022 Sport Glide. It proves that Milwaukee can innovate within its own tradition. It’s not the most radical, most comfortable, or lightest motorcycle, but it may be one of the most consistent for mixed use. A Harley-Davidson Sport Glide test ride is recommended to see if this compromise appeals to you. For many, it could well be the only motorcycle they really need.
