Overview
Has Harley-Davidson finally found the magic formula for creating a truly convertible motorcycle, a machine capable of transitioning from an urban cruiser to a comfortable touring bike without losing its identity? The Sport Glide, introduced in 2018 on the new Softail platform, seems to want to answer this ancestral question at the American manufacturer. The concept is not new; the Switchback had already attempted it with less success, but this time, engineers have taken a modern Softail base and equipped it from the start with an integrated and consistent transformation kit.

The heart of this proposition is its Milwaukee Eight 107 engine, this V2 that delivers 145 Nm of torque from 3000 rpm. This power, 84 horsepower, is not intended for speed records; the Sport Glide tops out around 170 km/h, but it offers the characteristic thrust and deep sound that define a Harley. With a dry weight announced at 304 kg, it sits in the middle of the Softail range, far from the Touring behemoths. The idea is clear: to offer the maneuverability and character of the new customs, like the Fat Bob, but with a touch of traveler practicality. The Softail frame, with its wheelbase of 1625 mm and a 680 mm seat height, promises relative agility despite the mass.
The transformation is the real argument. The bat-wing, that removable fairing above the headlight, and the two lockable saddlebags are Harley-Davidson Sport Glide accessories designed to visually integrate. They can be removed in a few minutes to reveal a pure, almost aggressive line, with its black mufflers and 18.9-liter tank. It is this duality that will seduce those looking for a used Harley-Davidson Sport Glide to vary their uses. In touring configuration, it offers wind protection and storage space, even if the latter is less voluminous than on a Road King. In naked configuration, it becomes a lighter and more playful urban custom. It's not a true touring bike; the 120 mm ground clearance and simple suspensions are proof of that, but it is an intelligent compromise.
Compared to its competitors, the Sport Glide occupies a particular niche. An Indian Scout, lighter and more lively, does not offer this versatility. A Harley Softail Standard, more classic, lacks this touring capability. The price, around €18,260 at its launch, positions this Harley-Davidson Sport Glide 2021 as a premium option in the Softail range, justified by its LED equipment, keyless start, and convertible kit. Its audience? The traveler who doesn't want to commit to a large bagger, but refuses the limitations of a pure custom on long journeys. The urban dweller who aspires to weekend getaways without sacrificing style.
The bet is risky. Harley-Davidson Sport Glide tests often reveal the compromise. The honorable fuel consumption of 5.3 l/100 km and acceptable comfort are assets. But the weight remains palpable in the city, and the bat-wing's protection is limited compared to a true touring fairing. However, for someone who wants one motorcycle for two faces, the Harley-Davidson Sport Glide custom represents a more accomplished proposition than its predecessors like the Switchback. It doesn't make two motorcycles, but it allows you to explore two worlds with a single engine, and that, at Harley, is already a small revolution.
