Overview

Twin spark plugs, 4 valves per cylinder, increased displacement, reduced idle vibrations... The Milwaukee Eight gives a new flavor to Harley-Davidson. Like its sister, the Road King, the Classic benefits from this new engine and its deep, throaty, generous breath. This touring custom is becoming more upscale with a gross torque of approximately 15 lb-ft obtained at 3250 rpm. Vocalizations, muscle, pulsed breathing, and a level never reached... The Road King has never known such fire. Except perhaps in its former CVO version. The 1746 cm3 engine is well on its way to garnering numerous votes and comments.

This mechanical aside, let's return to the essence of this motorcycle. Traversing roads, journeys, landscapes, and long distances on the handlebars of a Harley. At this idea, the enthusiast naturally thinks of the Electra Glide. A touch of nostalgia, a desire for retro, the feeling that time has forgotten to pass, and naturally, the Road King intervenes. Two interpretations for the same purpose – fairing and rigid saddlebags on one side; windshield and leather saddlebags on the other. An American-made custom, designed to go as far as the wind can blow. In addition to engine improvements, the FLHRC benefits from the Rushmore project to optimize the road experience.

Rushmore is the result of a gigantic listening exercise by H-D with its customers and dealers. They want more practicality, more comfort. Like all Touring range models, the Road King is equipped with the Reflex braking system. Combined with ABS, it automatically balances the braking power between the front and rear. This is not the only effort by Harley to improve the dynamics of this machine: the front fork has recently increased its diameter, from 43 to 49 mm. In 2017, this front end benefited from Showa SDBV technology. The rear abandons its pneumatic suspensions for a pair of emulsion shocks. Easier to adjust for preload, they will also ensure more consistency. A more marked efficiency should punctuate the roads traveled by this touring cruiser. Lighting is entrusted to a twin halogen, emitting a power of 986 lumens. In terms of practicality, we note a quick-release attachment system for easily opening the saddlebags - convenient but low-quality these plastic clips under beautiful leather straps. Still in a spirit of comfort, more ergonomic controls are installed on the handlebars.

Loaded with these improvements, the Road King Classic allows you to measure yourself against authentic escape. The saddlebags, a little larger with the Rushmore evolution, consent to take the essentials. The large removable windshield allows you to choose in an instant the caress of the air or the tranquility. Standard also: cruise control, long footpegs, a dual-branch selector, 16-inch spoked rims shod with whitewall tires, and plenty of American metal everywhere. Now, look at this motorcycle again: don't you want to show it every state of the West?
