Overview
Can a motorcycle be both a quintessential Milwaukee product and a European creation? The 2008 Night Train poses this intriguing question. Born in the offices of Harley-Davidson Europe to seduce the Old Continent, this Softail ultimately conquered the global catalog, proof that its stripped-down style found a universal echo. This is a machine that fully embraces its custom identity, with a simple philosophy: black, subtle chrome, and clean lines that aim straight for the heart.

With its double cradle frame that seemingly mimics vintage rigidity, the Night Train hides a modern comfort beneath its tough exterior. The true protagonist is, of course, the Twin Cam 96B with a displacement of 1573 cm³. With 71 horsepower, it’s far from the figures that shock Japanese speedometers, but the important thing is elsewhere. It delivers 117 Nm of torque from 3200 rpm, a visceral and deep surge that makes you forget the modest top speed of 160 km/h. The vibration, this sacred signature, is present but civilized by a balancer, avoiding excessive rusticity. Coupled with the six-speed transmission, this engine gives soul to the whole.
However, in use, some compromises become apparent. With a wet weight approaching 310 kg, the Night Train is not a nimble machine. The ground clearance of 130 mm and the wheelbase of nearly 1.70 m remind you that this is a cruiser built for straight lines and widely traced curves. The braking, with its two simple discs, does the job without flair, in the image of the motorcycle: sufficient for its use, but we are far from the sensations of a sportbike. The 19-liter fuel tank and consumption of around 4.4 L/100 km offer it correct autonomy for long getaways.
Faced with competitors like the Yamaha V-Star 1300 or certain Honda Shadows, the Night Train does not compete on price, with a price tag flirting with 20,300 euros. It bets everything on the aura and authenticity of the brand. Its audience? The customizer who seeks less performance than presence, understated aesthetics, and the feeling of the big V-twin. It is a motorcycle for those who value character more than raw numbers, for road trips on national highways more than for the track.
The FXSTB Softail Night Train is not a motorcycle for everyone. It is heavy, expensive, and not very fast. But it possesses that rare alchemy that transforms technical specifications into pure emotion. Between its charismatic engine, its elegant bad boy look, and its undeniable heritage, it remains a captivating chapter in the book of modern customs. We love it precisely for its assumed flaws, which are an integral part of its story. A motorcycle with character, simply.
