Overview
Who said you have to ride fast to have fun? The 2008 Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer embodies an entirely different motorcycle philosophy. One of long-distance travel, of pavement rolling by without stress, of a V-twin purring between your legs at low revs. With its 1552 cc housed in a V-twin featuring four valves per cylinder, it follows in the lineage of the VN 1600 Classic and Mean Streak, but pushes the needle toward grand touring. Generous windshield, hard saddlebags, sissy bar, and passenger grab rails as standard equipment: the spec sheet leaves no doubt about its purpose. You're here to eat up miles two-up, comfortably settled on a seat perched just 705 mm off the ground.

The V-twin produces 67 horsepower at 4700 rpm. On paper, that doesn't make anyone dream. But the figure that truly matters is torque: 124.5 Nm available from just 2700 rpm. This low-end power, almost instantaneous, turns every throttle roll-on into a smooth surge. The five-speed gearbox and shaft drive contribute to this sensation of mechanical refinement. You roll on the throttle, let the engine work in the fat part of the rev range, and the Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer takes care of the rest. The 20-liter tank offers decent range without being generous, especially if you maintain a reasonable cruising pace. Top speed caps out at 160 km/h, but honestly, who buys this motorcycle to flirt with the speedometer's limits?
The flip side shows up on the scales: 375 kg wet. That ocean-liner weight makes itself felt at low speed, during parking maneuvers, and through tight sequences of corners. Ground clearance, limited by the footpegs and engine guards, rules out any sporting ambitions in the mountains. If you lean a little, it works. If you lean hard, metal scrapes tarmac and things get unpleasant. The steel double-cradle frame and 43 mm fork with 150 mm of travel deliver sound behavior on highways and main roads, but don't ask this machine to imitate a roadster in mountain passes. Braking, handled by two 300 mm front discs and one rear, all fitted with two-piston calipers, gets the job done without distinction. At this mass, you're better off anticipating and making generous use of the rear brake to stabilize deceleration.
Against the competition, the VN1600 Tourer sits in the territory of the Yamaha Royal Star and Honda VTX 1800, with a more European temperament in its finish and road manners. Its list price of 15,299 euros places it in the upper-middle range of the segment, but the standard equipment partially offsets that price tag. It's clearly aimed at patient touring riders, at couples who want to share the road without sacrificing passenger comfort. The rear seat, well designed with its supports and backrest, ranks among the best in the custom market of its era.
The Kawasaki VN1600 Classic Tourer doesn't try to please everyone, and that's precisely what gives it its charm. It owns its size, its relative slowness, its inability to play the sportbike. In return, it offers a singular touring experience, carried by generous engine torque and superior comfort. A motorcycle of conviction, built for those who prefer savoring the journey over the destination.
