Overview
Can a Harley-Davidson designed for Europe still capture the raw essence of Milwaukee? That is the bold gamble of the 2007 Softail Night Train, a custom that seems straight out of a personalization workshop, with its deep black and total absence of chrome. This minimalist, almost dark, aesthetic is no accident. Originally, this model was a response to European tastes, a streamlined cruiser for those who found the usual catalog too flashy. Now globalized, the Night Train retains this serious bad boy look, a concentration of attitude perched on a Softail chassis with a rigid appearance.

The heart of the beast is the famous Twin Cam 96B, boosted to 1584 cm3. With 71 horsepower, the figures seem modest on paper, but that ignores the essential. The magic happens at 2750 rpm, where its 119 Nm of torque rips you from the traffic light with the authority of a locomotive. The twin-cylinder vibrates, breathes and growls with that inimitable musicality, but the presence of a balance shaft cleans up the picture. We are far from the brutal jolts of older generations. This engine offers character without the drawbacks, coupled with a six-speed gearbox that finally finds its purpose on the highway, even if the speedometer tops out around 160 km/h. The whole thing exudes a sense of invincibility.
However, you have to like compromises. At over 300 kilos fully fueled, the Night Train is not a fairy of the road. The 41 mm fork and concealed shock absorbers do a decent job of swallowing imperfections, but the 13 cm ground clearance quickly reminds you of its limits in tight turns. It is a machine for straight lines, wide avenues and style. The braking, ensured by two simple discs, requires marked anticipation, especially when the 19-liter tank is full. The 200 mm wide rear tire provides a monumental footprint, but it makes low-speed maneuvers a little laborious.
So, who is this motorcycle for? The elegant globetrotter who prioritizes style over flash and who covers long national distances without seeking absolute performance. It is also a formidable canvas for the customizer, a black base already accomplished that awaits only a few personal touches. Faced with a Honda VTX 1800 or a Yamaha V-Star 1300, more technological and sometimes more lively, Harley bets everything on emotion and identity. At over 20,000 euros at the time, it was a significant investment for a pure object of desire.
The Night Train is not the fastest, the most maneuverable, or the most comfortable in its category. But it possesses that aura, that stage presence that transcends the technical specifications. It sells you a mythology, a posture, the romance of the American road filtered through a European sensibility. We love it for its assumed flaws as much as for its qualities, for that deep rumble that resonates in the chest. It is a machine of sensations more than of numbers, and in that area, it remains unbeatable.
