Overview
Who said a touring motorcycle had to be a sanitized rocket or a rolling lounge on two wheels? In 2005, facing Japanese and German spacecraft, the Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide plants its flag with a conviction that is its own. With its Twin Cam 1450, it lines up figures that would make a 600cc sportbike smile: just 67 horsepower for nearly 380 kilograms all fueled up. An equation that, on paper, feels more like a museum than a highway. But that’s precisely why the Electra Glide isn’t a paper motorcycle.

Its purpose is quite different. Settled into its armchair, hands on this wide handlebar, you no longer think about pure performance. The 45° V-twin, with its 108.9 Nm of torque available low in the rev range, pushes the enormous machine with sovereign nonchalance. It swallows straight lines with the confidence of an ocean liner, its engine vibrating gently to recall the mechanical origin of the propulsion. At 100 mph, maximum cruising speed, you still breathe the air of the road, far from the clinical bubble of a Goldwing. That’s its whole charm, and its audience: the globetrotter for whom the journey is a sensory experience, not just a simple translation.
Of course, you have to accept the deal. The braking, ensured by modest discs and two-piston calipers, requires anticipation. The handling is serene in a straight line, but the 378 kilograms are keenly felt in tight curves. And at 24,750 euros at the time, you weren’t buying technological excess, but a tradition, a presence, a piece of American myth. The perimeter frame, the belt drive, the 69 cm high seat: everything is designed for cruising, for the image, for the feeling of belonging to a legend.
Facing a BMW K 1200 LT, infinitely faster and more sophisticated, the Ultra Classic plays a radically different score. It doesn’t seek to compete on the field of cold efficiency. Its injection, its correct but simple suspension, its enormous fairing integrating speakers, all contribute to a retro, authentic, and deliberately slow travel experience. For those who dream of the great highways listening to the heavy breath of their V-Twin, it remains an undisputed queen. For others, it will just be a beautiful and heavy relic. Harley-Davidson, true to itself, embraces this choice to the end.
