Overview
At the dawn of the 2000s, as European and Japanese touring bikes plunged into a race for electronics and quantified performance, Harley-Davidson maintained its course with a radically different proposition. The Ultra Classic Electra Glide, in its 2001 version, does not seek to impress with its technical specifications. With only 67 horsepower drawn from a large 1449 cc V-twin, it displays a power-to-displacement ratio that would make a Japanese engineer smile. Its weight, approaching 380 kilograms fully fueled, places it in the category of behemoths, and its top speed capped at 160 km/h does not evoke the racetrack. Yet, no one buys an Electra Glide for these figures. It is acquired for a sensation, for a posture, to embody a piece of American road mythology.

Its Twin Cam 88 engine, an evolution of the legendary Big Twin, is the heart of the experience. It does not roar, it pulses. Its torque of 109 Nm available from 3500 rpm is a constant wave of thrust, a quiet force that propels the machine without haste. The belt transmission, silent and supple, contributes to this feeling of fluidity. Here, the journey is measured in states of mind, not in lap times. The comfort is royal, literally, with a low seat at 69 cm, a full windscreen, saddlebags and a top case that define the standard of American grand touring. For nearly 25,000 euros at the time, one did not buy technological excess, but a complete ecosystem, a cabin on two wheels where the rider reigns supreme.
Of course, one must forgo agility. With such dimensions and suspension designed to swallow straight highways rather than to chase curves, the Electra Glide's dynamics are... diplomatic. It negotiates curves with majestic slowness, requiring anticipation and smooth riding. Compared to a Goldwing or a BMW K 1200 LT of the same era, faster, more precise and more versatile, the Harley proves less competent, but infinitely more distinctive. That is the dilemma. It does not satisfy the intellect of the technician, it speaks directly to the emotion of the long-distance rider.
This motorcycle is for the purist of travel, for whom the journey is as important as the destination. It is the machine of the great diagonals, of endless roads where the landscape slowly unfolds and the V-Twin's rumble becomes the soundtrack of the journey. It forgives its flaws through the unique feeling it provides: that of riding a legend, a moving piece of history. In 2001, the Ultra Classic Electra Glide was not a means of transport, it was a vessel for escape, an affirmation that on the road, myth sometimes has more value than simple performance.
