Overview
Motorcycle: Harley-Davidson CVO 1800 SOFTAIL CONVERTIBLE FLSTSE (2010)

Who said a motorcycle couldn’t have a double life? The 2010 CVO Softail Convertible is a bit of a chameleon in the custom world. At a standstill, with its compact fairing and buffalo leather saddlebags, it clearly displays its ambitions of grand touring. But scratch the surface, or rather unscrew a few fasteners, and you discover its true nature: a sleek, chrome cruiser, ready for a solo ride on country roads. This ability to transform in a few minutes, without tools, is not just a gimmick. It's the entire philosophy of this machine.
Beneath its appearance of a peaceful tourer lies a lion's heart, or at least a typically Harley 1803 cm3 V-Twin. With 96 horsepower, it’s far from the explosive performance of Japanese sportbikes, but a different game is at play here. The real figure to remember is this monumental torque of 128.5 Nm, arriving as early as 2500 rpm. On the road, this translates to a sovereign surge and a disconcerting ease, even in fifth or sixth gear. You pilot more with your wrist than with the gear selector, a sensation of infinite torque that perfectly suits the travel spirit. For the touring enthusiast seeking kilometers without effort, it's a massive argument.
However, it’s also necessary to talk about what happens when you remove the accessories. The transformation is radical. Farewell to the windshield and saddlebags, hello to the pure lines of the Softail frame and that oversized 200/50 rear tire. The beast loses its utilitarian side to reveal a custom with sparkling chrome. The pleasure then changes register completely. The motorcycle, visually lightened even though its weight remains substantial at over 340 kg in running order, gains presence. It becomes a rolling sculpture, perfect for a Sunday ride where style takes precedence over destination.
But this versatility comes at a cost, and not just financial, although the 30,000 euros of the time clearly positioned the machine in the high-end segment. The main compromise lies in the dynamics. With a low seat at 65 cm and a comfort-oriented geometry, the Convertible is not a gyroscope. It serenely traces its path in a straight line, swallowing imperfections with the seriousness of a Touring machine. On the other hand, in tight corners, its weight and wheelbase are felt. It's more about leaning it with conviction than watching it precisely. The brakes, although equipped with four-piston calipers, require firm pressure to contain the mass.
Ultimately, this Harley-Davidson CVO is for a particular rider: one who refuses to choose. It will seduce the customizer who, on certain weekends, wants to cover 500 km in relative comfort, and the dilettante touring enthusiast who values style as much as practicality. It is neither the most agile, nor the fastest, nor the most modern. But it possesses that unique character, that deep voice, and that ability to reinvent itself that charms the great Harleys. It is a machine of stories, offering two radically different experiences for the price of one. A rather successful mechanical sleight of hand.
