Overview
The imposing German custom receives a slight evolution. Revising internal parameters to meet Euro5+ standards is not without effect... as the enormous flat-twin gains 5 Nm of torque. Now boasting 163 Nm, it will provide an extra spoonful of satisfaction. The R18 takes the opportunity to redesign certain elements: the fenders, the exhaust systems, the engine covers, the seat (thicker), the lighting signature, and the wheels. They are no longer spoked and the rear wheel size changes to 18 inches. For increased comfort, the rear shock absorber is reworked. The new mufflers refine the silhouette and allow for a better view of the spectacular transmission and its exposed driveshaft. Finally, the front forks are no longer faired.
BMW’s largest Boxer is also the largest engine in its range. With a displacement as massive as those of North American productions, it also has a particularity that arrived in October 2021. A2 license holders will be able to discover and enjoy it. The manufacturer will offer the possibility of restricting it to 35 kW. However, the machine is not really intended for novices. A third of a ton, a buffalo engine, torque, and character... it is far from an MT-07 or a Z 650, and their ease of use. This does allow those freshly licensed riders to treat themselves to a truly beautiful machine, however.
One can say that it knows how to present itself. BMW forcefully entered the custom segment with its R 18. Long awaited, the machine allowed desire to work until the adoption of a large and elegant presence. With its 1802 cm3 Big Boxer, its looks inspired by the R5 (1936), and its exposed driveshaft transmission, this cruiser makes a solid first impression.
Power! Strong arms, a dimension that spreads, a precious moment astride a pile of mechanical lyricism – here the R18 custom asserts itself. It makes you forget the failed R 1200 C, and we will not devote more than this line to it. With it, BMW wants to hit hard in this segment. And as one does not compete with the category’s leaders without serious preparations, the Bavarian firm combines its intense memories with technology from yesterday and the canons of today.
BMW clearly emphasizes the affiliation between its R5 and this R18. Hmm... One feels more inspiration drawn from American bison, those of Milwaukee and Springfield, primarily. Since we are crossing stories, let's briefly compare some information about the 1936 machine and its great-great-granddaughter. Great not necessarily being the most appropriate word. The R5 produced 24 horsepower; today, we talk about 91 horses – almost 4 times more. Flat twin for both, with 494 cm3 in the 1930s versus 1802 cm3 eight decades later. In terms of weight, one can say that it is the gazelle (165 kilos) observing the abuse of cream, torque, fat, and metal (345 kilos) of its offspring. Inflation in all directions, which the Big Boxer sums up all by itself.
Enormous, with a striking presence, proud of its lungs exploding the perimeter space, the engine of the R18 resembles a metal ogre. With its (almost) 111 kilos, it already weighs 2/3 of an R5. For enthusiasts, you need displacement, stature, a huge hand that lifts the steel and the heart. 1802 cm3 exactly, which makes it the largest of BMW Motorrad’s twins... also the largest of all the manufacturer’s motorcycle engines. From its entrails, the Big Boxer already produces 15.3 mkg from 2,000 rpm. A minimum value, as the peak reaches 16.6 at 3,000 rpm. Insist a little in the low range, there are 150 Nm up to 4,000 rpm. Continue even further to reach maximum power, showing its 91 horsepower at 4,750 rpm. But you will have shifted gears long before.
BMW has not applied its most recent innovations (and even older ones) to this 1800. No Shiftcam, no liquid cooling, not even overhead camshafts. One would almost expect to see carburetors... and it would actually suit it well. This block is still entirely new, but the manufacturer wanted it to feel authentic, the scents of an era when metal flowed in the hands of men. Here, the camshafts are located in the center of the engine, actuating the valves via rocker arms proudly displayed above the cylinders.
The 1802 cc R18 is challenging American motorcycles with a similar displacement, comparable power, and tonnage, and to settle in the wheel, a premium price.
