Overview
With its R18, BMW has built quite a family of cruisers and tourers, much like Indian and Harley-Davidson. A common base with variants of different castings, to answer the calls of the road. The Roctane bridges the gap between the R 18 Classic and the R 18 B, in a darker style and with a certain hot-rod inclination.
A rebel, as there is in every aristocracy dynasty. She had her studies in Berlin-Spandau (the factory) but dreams of hoodlums. To give herself a dark feel, her engine is painted black, with polished cylinder heads. Her foot controls (with a double-branch selector) and the levers are black as well, as are the intake manifold covers, the valve covers, the handlebar, and so on.
But it is on its front end that the R 18 Roctane asserts its menace. It has adopted a large 21-inch wheel and a very distinctive headlight assembly. The speedometer has been integrated into it, as with virtually all BMWs from the 1930s to the 1970s.
The Roctane also plays with some effects, such as its two-tiered muscle-bike-style seat, specific chrome star-shaped counter nuts for the exhaust, a high handlebar and a long rear skirt to capture attention. Large but slender, not a little proud of a certain majesty, the motorcycle asserts itself by its mere presence. Rigid saddlebags seat its rear end without weight (or dynamism either) and offer a load capacity of 27 liters and 10 kilos each. However, there’s no way Béhème will do anything to remove the straight exhaust pipe; which masks part of the sublime exposed cardan transmission; as with all other R 18s, alas, including the R 18 B, R 18 Classic and R 18 Transcontinental.
Apart from the 21 and 18-inch wheels and a different wheelbase by a few millimeters, the Roctane’s chassis is identical to the other R 18s. A very classic steel double cradle frame acting as a faux hardtail supports the 49 mm fork, the 16-liter tank, the seat, the fenders, the single shock absorber, the suspension components and the large 1802 cm3 twin. A mass of metal, character and torque, with more than 15 mkg always available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. The largest engine in the BMW range produces 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm and a maximum torque of 16.6 mkg (5 more than before, brought by the Euro5+ engine evolution). Nice and fat. And a behavior with three well-defined octaves thanks to the Rain, Roll and Rock riding Modes.
She doesn’t look like it, but the R 18 is not spared by the omnipresence of electronics. BMW grafts Keyless Ride, the ASC anti-slip control, the MSR engine torque regulation and cruise control onto it. Nothing prevents you from wanting more, but there, you will have to dig into the options. The PRO finish, for example, adds Hill Start Control Pro, adaptive cornering headlights, heated grips, a reverse gear and an alarm. Small detail: this large motorcycle doesn’t forget young motorcyclists and can be restricted to 47.5 hp for A2. A surprising choice, given the size and weight. A 374-kilo cruiser of such dimensions requires a certain amount of experience. Granted, there are large brakes with 300 mm discs, 4-piston calipers at the front and Integral ABS. But you can quickly be overwhelmed by such a mass if you’re not careful. However, there’s no need to worry about dynamic behavior. The R 18 family enjoys a good reputation.
With the R 18 Roctane, BMW is messing with the flagship duo in this niche: the Harley Road King and the Indian Springfield. The three present the same strong arguments, as well as a desire to live the road in a rock style. The German one marks a big difference with its flat engine and its Bavarian accent in the connecting rods. But what niche are we talking about? The bagger, the one that mixes pieces of hard and baronnerie in its style.
