Overview
How can you justify a price that far exceeds that of a new compact car? By creating a machine that is comparable to nothing, or almost nothing. Let's take the base, a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra, already a fortress of comfort. Then, inject it with the DNA of the Custom Vehicle Operations department, the holy grail of in-house customization. The result is the CVO 1800 Limited of 2014, a behemoth weighing 930 lbs when fully fueled that transforms the very idea of motorcycle travel into a princely experience. This is far from a simple motorcycle; it enters the realm of mechanical artwork, with a price tag to make you gasp: €40,000.

The recipe is simple on paper: take the best, and improve it even further. The Rushmore platform brings its redesigned Batwing fairing, ABS coupled with Reflex linked braking, and the BOOM! 6.5 GT multimedia system with touchscreen and GPS. But the CVO adds its exclusive touch: hand-painted Thunderblade paint, dazzling chrome wheels, heated seating controllable by the passenger, and an amplifier boosted to 75 watts per channel. Every detail proclaims that this machine is a limited edition, a statement more than a means of transportation. For the rider accustomed to sporty roadsters, the whole thing may seem ostentatious, even excessive. But for its target audience, the demanding traveler for whom the journey begins with absolute comfort, every option has its reason for being.
Under the 22.7-liter fuel tank beats the heart of the beast: the mythical Twin-Cooled V-Twin 1803 cm³ engine. With 154.9 Nm of torque available from 3750 rpm, it’s not about chasing peak power – 96 horsepower remain modest for such a displacement – but about having an unstoppable, fluid, and sovereign traction force. This engine, air- and oil-cooled with liquid-cooled cylinder heads, was a rarity at the time for Harley. It gives this ocean liner surprising ease, capable of swallowing highways effortlessly, even if the announced top speed of 170 km/h reminds you that the priority lies elsewhere. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox ensure smooth progress, perfect for long, straight roads.
Facing the competition, such as the Honda Gold Wing or the BMW K 1600 GTL, which are more technological and agile, the CVO Limited fully embraces its identity. It does not seek to be the fastest or most precise in corners. Its double cradle frame and 43 mm telescopic fork are there to ensure stability and serenity, not to show off on mountain passes. Its weight commands respect and anticipatory riding. But once launched, it deploys a feeling of invincibility and comfort that makes you forget its size. Pneumatic rear suspensions smooth out imperfections, and the 29.1-inch seat height, quite accessible, belies its intimidating appearance.
So, who is this queen of the roads for? Certainly not for a beginner, nor for a track rider seeking raw sensations. It targets the Harley purist, the aesthete for whom every chrome accessory is important, and the long-distance traveler who considers his motorcycle a rolling lounge. Is this unreasonable? Absolutely. But that’s also the whole spirit of the CVO range: to push desire and realization beyond the reasonable. On this Limited, every component, from the 1803 cm³ engine to the improved saddlebags, tells a story of boundless passion. You buy it with your heart, for prestige and for the unique feeling of riding the pinnacle of what Milwaukee could offer at the time. A monument on two wheels, simply.
