Overview

One hundred and twenty years Milwaukee has been flexing its mechanical muscle, and when it's time to blow out the candles, it's always the Fat Boy they seat at the head of the table. Makes sense. Ever since its first screen appearance on Schwarzenegger's arm, this behemoth has embodied American custom in its most unapologetic form. For this 2023 anniversary, Harley-Davidson rolls out a special edition FLFBSANV limited to 3,000 numbered units, each stamped on the console of the tank. The kind of series that turns a motorcycle into a collector's item before you've even turned the key.

On the cosmetic front, Milwaukee spared no expense. The Heirloom Red Fade livery plays on a gradient of deep reds elevated by Midnight Crimson accents, all framed in chrome polished like a barber's mirror. The engine and air cleaner badges echo this crimson palette, while an eagle medallion sits proudly on the tank flanks. The two-up seat, perched just 675 mm off the ground, sports a two-tone finish with red and gold stitching and the logo embroidered in golden thread. It borders on the level of finish found on CVOs, Harley's ultra-premium line. And sure enough, it borders on the price tag too.

Because here's the sticking point: €32,600. That's over €6,000 more than the standard Fat Boy, for mechanically identical hardware. Beneath that ceremonial dress beats the same Milwaukee Eight displacing 1,868 cc, a 45° V-twin delivering 94 horsepower at 5,020 rpm and, more importantly, 155 Nm of torque from just 3,250 rpm. Numbers that won't rival an Indian Chief Dark Horse on paper, but that make complete sense once you're in the saddle. This V-Twin doesn't chase raw performance. It hauls its 317 kg wet weight with a thick, almost lazy smoothness, transmitted to the 240 mm rear tire via a belt drive and a six-speed gearbox with positive engagement. All wrapped in a throaty rumble that remains the brand's finest calling card.

The chassis, a steel double-cradle frame, makes no claim to rival the sportier machines in the segment. The 41.3 mm telescopic fork offers 130 mm of travel, while the mono-shock hidden beneath the seat manages just 86 mm. On rough roads, comfort remains basic, and the 18.9-liter tank demands regular fuel stops. With a top speed capped at 175 km/h, this is not a machine built to devour highways. The Fat Boy is an urban and suburban cruiser, made for riding elbow-to-door and turning heads. And in that department, this anniversary edition delivers without question.

The fundamental question remains: is paying such a premium for paint and badges reasonable? Probably not, if you're thinking purely in terms of price-to-equipment ratio. But Harley doesn't sell reason. The manufacturer sells belonging, heritage, a ticket into a club that celebrates its anniversaries with clockwork regularity. After the 95th, 100th, 105th, 110th, and 115th editions, this 120th Fat Boy carries on a well-oiled tradition. The 3,000 units will find buyers with ease, snapped up by collectors and enthusiasts who will never compare their purchase to a Kawasaki Vulcan. That's the whole Harley paradox: you know you're overpaying, and you sign the order form anyway.
