Overview

What drives Harley-Davidson to blow up its own styling conventions? The Fat Bob FXFBS, in its 2019 Softail vintage, delivers a brutal answer to that question. Gone is the leisurely custom cruiser, gone are the well-behaved lines inherited from the past. Here, everything is built to provoke: the aggressive dual LED headlight, the squat lines, the compact silhouette of a pitbull ready to pounce. We're a long way from Milwaukee's quiet boulevard, and that's precisely what makes this machine fascinating.

Beneath that bruiser's bodywork lies a Milwaukee Eight 114 V-twin displacing 1868 cc, set at the traditional 45-degree angle. The numbers speak for themselves: 94 horsepower at 5020 rpm, but above all 154.9 Nm of torque available from just 3000 rpm. This engine doesn't try to chase redline like a Japanese sportbike. It shoves, it hauls, it pins you to the backrest with almost insolent authority. The extra power of the 114 over the base 107 fully justifies the premium, because this Fat Bob demands breathing room to express its character. With a 10.5:1 compression ratio and a bore/stroke of 102 x 114.3 mm — decidedly oversquare in stroke — the temperament is clearly geared toward low-end torque, punchy acceleration, and that deep rumble that vibrates through your chest.

The chassis deserves a closer look. Harley ditched the old Softail frame for a redesigned, stiffer steel double-cradle that transforms road behavior. The 43 mm inverted fork up front and the hidden mono-shock under the seat offer limited travel — 130 and 113 mm respectively — but the action is noticeably cleaner than the previous Dyna generation. We're not talking about a track machine, let's be clear. At 306 kg wet on 16-inch tires (150/80 front, 180/70 rear), the Fat Bob remains a heavyweight that prefers sweeping curves to tight switchbacks. But the steering precision is surprising for a rig this size. Braking, handled by twin 300 mm discs up front clamped by four-piston calipers, proves up to the task of scrubbing off that mass.

That said, you have to accept certain compromises. The 13.6-liter tank demands frequent stops — a real drawback for anyone dreaming of devouring highway miles. The 710 mm seat height will appeal to shorter riders, but taller pilots will feel cramped. And top speed caps out at 175 km/h, which is nothing to be ashamed of for a custom packing nearly 1900 cc, but clearly defines the machine's ambitions. Against an Indian Scout Bobber, lighter and more agile, or a Triumph Bonneville Bobber, more refined in its approach, the Fat Bob plays the card of unapologetic excess. It's neither the most efficient nor the most versatile. It's the most spectacular.

At €20,110, Harley positions its Fat Bob 114 in a high price bracket, but one that's consistent with what it delivers. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox ensure hassle-free daily operation. This motorcycle is aimed at riders who want a modern custom, visually radical, capable of holding its own on the road without embarrassment while preserving the soul of a big American twin. Not a beginner's toy, not a track rat's tool. A machine of character, built for those who want to ride differently and aren't afraid of turning heads.
