Overview

What drives Harley-Davidson to offer two versions of the same model, separated by a simple checkbox on the order form? With the 2019 Breakout FXBRS, Milwaukee plays the engine option card rather than the special edition one. The principle is straightforward: take the base Softail Breakout equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight 107, and graft on the 114 block — 1,868 cc of 45° V-twin. The result is a custom dragster that gains in character what it doesn't necessarily gain in versatility.

The 114 V-Twin produces 94 horsepower at 5,020 rpm, but it's the torque that really talks: 154.9 Nm available from just 3,000 rpm. A figure that even surpasses the very first CVO version fitted with the Screamin' Eagle 1,803 cc engine. Delicious paradox — that ancestor boasted slightly higher peak power, but the current block, with its 4 valves per cylinder and 10.5:1 compression ratio, favors low-end grunt. In practice, you crack open the right grip and all 305 kg of machine lurch forward with an authority the 107 ci simply cannot match. One extra kilogram-meter of torque on paper, but a difference you distinctly feel during roll-on acceleration and corner exits.

The revised Softail platform merged the frame and running gear into a stiffer, lighter package — 15 kilograms lighter than the previous generation. The tubular steel double-cradle frame houses a 49 mm fork offering 130 mm of travel up front, while the mono-shock hidden beneath the seat makes do with just 86 mm at the rear. That's scant, and on rough roads, your back remembers it. The seat, perched at a mere 665 mm, pins the rider flush to the tarmac in a classic dragster posture — feet forward, arms stretched toward a low handlebar. The 240 mm rear tire mounted on an 18-inch rim imposes its massive silhouette, while the front rolls on a 130/60 fitted to a 21-inch rim. This combination dictates road behavior: rock-steady in a straight line, lazy through a series of curves.

The braking gets the job done without fanfare. A 300 mm disc gripped by a four-piston caliper up front, a 292 mm disc with a two-piston caliper at the rear. For a machine of this heft, it's adequate — nothing more. The six-speed gearbox transmits the cavalry via a belt drive, a reliable and quiet solution that fits the model's philosophy. The 13.2-liter tank demands frequent fuel stops, especially if you tap into the 114's potential. Expect a modest range that confines the Breakout to Sunday rides rather than transcontinental hauls. For that, there's the Road Glide.

At €24,110, the Breakout 114 sits in the upper bracket of the Softail lineup. The premium over the 107 is justified by the extra torque and access to exclusive colorways reserved for this engine option. This is an unabashed poser's motorcycle, built for boulevards and ruler-straight highways, aimed at a crowd already won over by the Harley universe. Up against an Indian Chief Dark Horse or even a Triumph Rocket 3, the Breakout isn't playing the same tune. It sells a silhouette, a soundtrack, and a Saturday morning ritual. And in that very particular register, it does so with 1,868 cc of conviction.
