Three wheels, zero compromise on attitude. That's the best way to sum up the 2025 Harley-Davidson Freewheeler, a trike that flatly refuses to look like a retiree's pleasure cruiser. Compared to the plusher, more upscale Tri Glide Ultra, the Freewheeler plays the unapologetic hot rod card. 57 kilos lighter, nearly 7,000 euros cheaper, it trades the hushed comfort for a lean, muscular profile. Two visions of the trike, one shared twin-rear-wheel platform, but a radically different philosophy.

Since its blacked-out makeover began in 2023, the machine has taken on a darker temperament. Headlight nacelle, tank console, controls, engine block, exhaust — chrome has given way to dark finishes that toughen the silhouette. The switch from 15- to 18-inch rear wheels has beefed up the rear end and planted the beast more firmly on the ground. At 513 kg fully fueled and with a seat height of just 700 mm, the Freewheeler remains a behemoth — but a behemoth that aims to be approachable. Its low seat height is reassuring, and that's precisely the kind of detail that matters when you're maneuvering a trike through a supermarket parking lot.
Beneath the 22.7-liter tank beats the Milwaukee Eight 114, a 1,868 cc air-and-oil-cooled 45° V-twin. No liquid cooling here — just air and oil, four valves and two spark plugs per cylinder, and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Power tops out at a modest 83 hp at 4,750 rpm on paper. But the real argument sits lower in the rev range: 115.7 lb-ft of torque available from just 3,000 rpm. This V-twin doesn't chase redline — it pushes hard and early. The six-speed gearbox and belt final drive handle the rest, with a smoothness perfectly suited to the trike's road-going nature. Top speed caps out at 170 km/h, more than enough for a machine of this size.
On the chassis side, a tubular steel double-cradle frame houses a 49 mm telescopic fork with 117 mm of travel. Braking relies on twin 300 mm discs squeezed by four-piston calipers up front and a single 270 mm disc at the rear. The onboard electronics have taken a significant step forward with the trike-specific RDRS package. Cornering-linked braking, corner-sensitive adaptive ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control — everything now factors in lean angle. On a vehicle that doesn't lean but turns flat, this precise dynamic management radically changes behavior through sequences of curves.

The Freewheeler targets a very specific audience. Holders of a standard car license who want a taste of the American V-twin experience without obtaining a motorcycle license. Riders who, for physical reasons, can no longer balance on two wheels but refuse to hang up their helmets. The rear trunk swallows two helmets, two-up riding is feasible, and the Mini-Apehangers place your hands high enough to ride with relaxed arms over long distances. At 36,295 euros, the price tag is steep, but it positions the Freewheeler as a credible — and far less expensive — alternative to the Tri Glide Ultra. A machine that leaves no one indifferent, whether on the road or in the mirrors.
