Overview
Who could possibly need 413 kg of motorcycle, a 1746 cc V-twin, and an audio system worthy of a rolling living room? Long-distance riders, the ones who devour back roads by the hundreds without ever checking the time. The 2018 Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited FLHTK is not for the undecided. It draws a clear line between classic Touring models and CVO territory, those limited editions where the price soars without restraint. At €29,950, it plays in a league where the Gold Wing remains its most serious rival, but with a radically different philosophy.

Beneath the Batwing fairing sits the Milwaukee Eight 107, the ninth generation of the 45-degree V-twin dear to Milwaukee. Four valves per cylinder, dual air-oil cooling, a counterbalancer that absorbs three-quarters of the vibrations at idle. The 90 horsepower announced at 5,450 rpm only tells part of the story. The real selling point is the torque: 152 Nm available from just 3,250 rpm. This engine never asks to be thrashed. It pulls hard, low, with a smoothness the Twin Cam 103 never offered. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox complete a package calibrated for the long haul, not outright performance. Top speed caps out at 170 km/h, an almost trivial figure on a machine designed for rhythm, not racing.
The chassis, a steel double cradle, carries its 413 kg wet weight with deceptive confidence. The 49 mm Showa fork and the two rear emulsion shocks, adjustable in preload via a simple knob, filter rough pavement adequately. The Reflex linked braking system with ABS proves reassuring: below 40 km/h, each control operates independently; above that, the electronics distribute pressure between the 300 mm front and rear discs, each gripped by a four-piston caliper. For a machine of this size, the setup works well, even if it falls short of the precision a BMW R 1250 RT offers on winding roads. The low seat, at 740 mm, lets you plant both feet flat and maneuver the battleship in parking lots without breaking a sweat.
On the equipment front, Harley pushed the bar high. The 6.5-inch BOOM Box touchscreen integrates GPS, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and connectivity for USB drives or SD cards. Heated grips and cruise control come standard. The Tour Pak trunk and hard saddlebags open with a single press and lock with one button. The passenger gets a wider seat, a backrest reworked in height and angle, and adjusted armrests. The Daymaker LED headlight and its fog lights cut through the night with genuine effectiveness. The 22.7-liter tank allows decent range without hunting for a gas station every 150 kilometers. Every detail reveals a machine built to ride long distances, two-up, fully loaded.

The main drawback remains obvious: weight. Maneuvering this Ultra Limited in city traffic or on a sloped parking lot is a genuine workout. And at this price, the absence of semi-active suspension or a quickshifter — now commonplace among Japanese and German competitors — is hard to overlook. But those who choose this Harley aren't really comparing it to an RT or a Gold Wing. They want the rumble of the V-twin, the Batwing silhouette, the Harley-Davidson ritual. For road warriors who value atmosphere over lap times, the 2018 FLHTK fulfills its promise with a poise that's hard to dispute.
