Overview

When it comes to long-distance American-style touring, there's no beating around the bush: the Milwaukee ocean liner tips the scales at 414 kilograms fully loaded, lists at €28,390 in the catalog, and unapologetically owns its identity as a rolling living room. This is not a motorcycle for everyone. In fact, it's precisely the opposite of a motorcycle for everyone, and that's exactly why it exists.

Harley-Davidson 1690 ULTRA LIMITED FLHTK

At the heart of the matter is the Twin Cam 103, thoroughly revised for the Rushmore generation. Harley did something bold without ever making a show of it: slipping liquid cooling into an engine that had always rejected the idea. Only the cylinder heads are concerned, with fluid circulating around the exhaust valves, where heat is most aggressive. The thermal exchangers disappear discreetly into the lower fairings. The result on paper: 86 horsepower at 5,010 rpm and, more importantly, 137.3 Nm of torque available from 3,750 rpm, with a compression ratio raised to 10.1:1. In real-world use, the difference is felt in traffic jams, where older versions would turn the rider's legs into a rotisserie. The claimed gain exceeds 10% on both fronts, and even if the raw numbers remain modest compared to a BMW R1200RT or a Honda Gold Wing, the character of the 45-degree V-twin doesn't translate onto a dyno readout.

The rest of the Rushmore program touches everything without upending anything, which is both the strength and the limitation of the exercise. The Batwing — that iconic fairing — receives a central air intake beneath the windshield, the result of 3,000 aerodynamic tests aimed at reducing turbulence around the helmet. The fork grows to 49 mm in diameter, and the wheels gain rigidity while shedding weight. Reflex braking with ABS brings intelligent management: below 40 km/h, the front and rear circuits operate independently; above that, electronic distribution takes over. On a machine of this size, it's a welcome evolution, not a luxury.

On board, the BOOM Box 6.5 GT definitively replaces the CD radio of a bygone era. A 6.5-inch touchscreen, built-in GPS with over 35 features, 25 watts per channel, Bluetooth, voice recognition: Harley is playing in the premium sedan league. The Jukebox unit accepts USB drives and SD cards. For the passenger, the seat gains 2.5 centimeters in width, the backrest is reworked in every dimension, and the armrests repositioned. Seat height at 740 mm, a 22.7-liter tank, 6-speed belt-drive gearbox: everything conspires to swallow miles without a second thought. Heated grips and cruise control are standard.

Should you take the plunge at €28,390? The question deserves a straight answer. Measured against a Gold Wing or a Multistrada Grand Touring, the Ultra Limited doesn't win on top speed — capped at 170 km/h — nor on lightness. It wins on identity, on the promise of a particular idea of American-style travel, set to the slow pulse of the V-twin and the distinctive rumble of a belt drive. It's as much a philosophical choice as a financial one. The seasoned tourer who knows what they're looking for won't find anything better in the Milwaukee lineup outside of the CVO. Everyone else will likely do better elsewhere — and they won't necessarily be wrong.
