Overview

When BMW decides to tickle the American market (or the “American-style” market, to be precise), it doesn’t hold back. Its long experience in the touring motorcycle sector is an asset that all manufacturers envy. Yet, it’s not easy to shake Harley-Davidson’s dominance in the Tourer segment. So, Bavaria sends the R 18 Transcontinental and this suave K 1600 Grand America into the fray.

Appeared in 2018 to offer more presence to the K 1600 B, the Grand America provides an alternative to the eternal American heavyweight tourers. Its modern style combines German frontal power with a very successful, flowing rear end. Alas, the “stylized” cases cannot accommodate a helmet. Fortunately, the top case is immense.

The revamped version retains the original design, with a few almost imperceptible tweaks. A subtle change to the front to adapt to the new headlight – it gains adaptive lighting as standard. And that’s it. This imposing vessel continues its very successful appearance, worthy of a majesty of the road. We still appreciate the lined rear lights embedded on the side of the cases.

The taut silhouette is the initial impact, the engine confirms the uppercut. With the K 1600 series, BMW showcases its talents as an engine manufacturer with the 6-cylinder inline architecture that has made its reputation in the automotive world. The Euro5 standard has forced it to revise its emissions. Engineers added two additional lambda probes and revised engine management. With brilliance: not only is the torque increased from 175 to 180 Nm, at the same engine speed of 5,250 rpm; but the power is preserved while arriving sooner. The maximum of 160 horsepower is reached 1,000 rpm sooner. The power of the remanufactured 1,649 cc begins to provide a bit more low-end grunt around 3,000 rpm, then the gap gradually increases until 5,000 rpm where it strengthens before establishing its maximum at 6,750 revolutions per minute.

This makes this block with its fabulous breath and vigor even more delectable. But to enjoy it as it should be, BMW has put everything around it to offer incredible comfort. The Dynamic ESA next Gen suspension completely automates the work of the damping according to two laws: Road for riding in touring comfort or Cruise to switch to sofa mode with even more suppleness. This will be the perfect time to place your boots on the footrests installed on the sides of the 6-cylinder. All while having a relaxed seat height, at 750 mm from the ground.

The level of refinement is also a top-flight riding position. The first K 1600s already had beautiful components, with a TFT screen surrounded by analog dials. The new generation moves up a level, with the immense screen first previewed on the R 1250 RT. 10.25 inches diagonally, the size of an iPad keyboard... This allows you to comfortably fit the GPS navigation on one side and a whole host of information on the other in shared mode. But the navigator is not integrated into the system; it uses an app to be installed on the smartphone. Which you can fit in the waterproof, ventilated compartment provided on the tank, complete with a USB socket.

A serious tourer can also be appreciated with music, although the enchanting melody of the engine is enough to delight the ears. The K 1600 Grand America features a new 2.0 audio system, much better integrated than the old one. A good playlist and the BM sound system will show its qualities. A track by Kavinsky or Kenny Loggins might make you want to push the machine to high speed, but the manufacturer wanted to limit the temptation and risks, with a top speed limited to 162 km/h.

Hidden beneath the riding comfort, BMW has installed a number of electronic modules. We expected nothing less. And the Grand America carries as many as a car: triple Riding Modes (Dynamic – Road – Rain), engine torque control (updated), hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, cruise control, ABS Pro reactive in corners... Let's not forget to mention some comfort features, such as heated seats and grips, an electrically adjustable windscreen, a reverse gear, a USB socket in the top case, emergency call system, welcome lighting system, etc.

Regarding its chassis, the Grand America, like the other K 1600s, has not moved an iota. Nor would it be necessary. We also forget the unusual presence of its Duolever longitudinal arm fork (close to the Fior system). The rear section combines with the Paralever swingarm. All connected by a perimeter aluminum frame. To stop its 367 kg, three 320 mm brake discs are at work, with radial 4-piston calipers at the front and two-piston calipers at the rear.

In the K16 series, the Grand America is surely the one that travels the most in a "future American highway." The 6-cylinder and equipment are further improved under the most senatorial robe. A superlative motorcycle, the price of which is obviously up to its performance. Do you have a housing savings plan? It will swallow it up. And it is justified; unlike some productions more focused on egocentric exuberance. It just needs an automatic gearbox for some high-mileage riders.
