Overview
With its sharp lines and missile-like stance, the Ducati Superbike 1098 S poses a simple question: can one still be a characterful Italian sportbike without sacrificing precision? In 2007, Ducati answers with this S version, an evolution that goes beyond a simple badge, but deeply revises the chassis to confront the Japanese on their playing field: rigor.

The base remains the 1099 cm³ Testastretta V2, an engine that doesn’t need revisions to impress. 160 horsepower at 9750 rpm and 122.6 Nm of torque at 8000 rpm give it a hoarse voice and explosive progression. A compression ratio of 12.5:1 ensures an immediate response. On the standard 1098, this raw power could sometimes seem a little untamed. The S version changes the game with a fully adjustable 43 mm Öhlins fork and a single-shock monoshock from the same brand. The single-sided swingarm is retained, but the link between the trellis frame and the road becomes conversation rather than confrontation. An Öhlins steering damper completes the picture to stabilize the view in tight corners.
The real feat lies in weight management. Ducati announces a dry weight of 171 kg. To achieve this figure, engineers replaced the standard rims with forged Marchesini models, reducing unsprung masses by nearly 2 kg. A carbon fiber fender also contributes to the effort. The result is a motorcycle that ranks among the lightest in its class, rivaling the best Japanese bikes in terms of agility. The wheelbase of 1430 mm and a seat height of 820 mm provide an engaged riding position, but the control offered by the Öhlins suspensions makes this aggression manageable.
At €21,195, the 1098 S is not an affordable option. It is aimed at the track rider or collector seeking the ultimate expression of the Ducati Superbike before the Panigale era. Compared to a Honda CBR1000RR or a Yamaha YZF-R1 of the time, it offers less pure power, but an incomparable character and mechanical feel. Its 15.5-liter tank and V2 architecture also position it as a sportbike with more personality, less aseptic than its competitors.
The 1098 S proves that Ducati could compete on the field of precision. It is not the most versatile or easiest motorcycle to approach – it remains a demanding machine, with a chain transmission and an engine that requires commitment. But for those seeking a sportbike with a beating heart, a history, and the ability to transform every ride into an event, it represents a culmination. It was not just a response to the Japanese; it was a statement: passion can be perfectly calibrated.
