Overview
Imagine an Italian road bike that has subtly swallowed the heart of a 996, all dressed in grand touring bodywork as understated as a three-piece suit. That’s the ST4 S from 2003. Externally, it plays the card of total understatement, blending almost with its little sister, the ST2. You have to look closely to notice the new switchgear or the coded key immobilizer. But don’t be fooled by this elegance; it’s a lure.

Beneath the 21-liter fuel tank beats the soul of a super sport bike: the famous 996 cm3 L-twin, delivering 117 roaring horsepower at 8750 rpm. The difference with the engine of the standard ST4 is measured on the dynamometer, with nearly 10 Nm of additional torque, or almost 100 Nm in total. This translates on the road into generous thrust from 4000 rpm, a vehemence that transforms each outing into an event. You find yourself keeping a high gear in the corners, as the engine breathes wide and strong. It’s a road bike with a racer’s fever.
This high-performance philosophy is confirmed by the chassis. The Ducati trellis frame is, of course, present, but it’s at the rear that the magic happens, with a single Öhlins shock absorber, adjustable with a simple wheel click. Paired with 43 mm inverted forks, it offers handling of absolute rigor. The bike, at 239 kg all fueled up, feels surprisingly agile and precise. The braking, with its twin 320 mm front discs, bites with the ferocity expected of an Italian, and ABS as an option (a rarity for the time) adds an extra touch of serenity.
Ultimately, who is this ST4 S? It’s the perfect machine for the demanding touring rider who refuses to compromise on thrills. It devours the tarmac at 245 km/h without a flicker, but rewards you in every curve with the feeling of a pure sport bike. Its drawback? Probably its price at the time, 14,200 euros, a fortune that placed it in the yard of major Japanese touring bikes, often more versatile and serene. But here, you’re not paying for comfort; you’re investing in character, a raw emotion that few GTs can still offer. A unique piece, halfway between the lounge and the racetrack.
