Overview
When Ducati decides to increase engine displacement, it's not just for the sake of changing numbers on a specification sheet. The jump from 821 to 939 cubic centimeters on this Hypermotard responds to a real constraint: meeting Euro4 emissions standards without compromising the character of the machine. As a result, the bore increases from 88 to 94 mm, the crankshaft, pistons, and cylinder heads are completely revised, and the Testastretta twin emerges from the operation with 113 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and, above all, 97.9 Nm of torque at 7,500 rpm. The latter figure increases by nearly 10% compared to the previous generation, and it arrives earlier in the rev range. This is where the essential pleasure of a supermotard is found.

Physically, the Ducati Hypermotard 939 doesn't shout about its newness. A slightly revised silencer, retroreflectors added to the bottom of the fork legs to satisfy homologation requirements, and that's about it. The steel trellis frame remains in the Bolognese tradition, the wheelbase tightens by 7 mm to accentuate agility in corners, the 43 mm non-adjustable inverted fork does the job, and the fully adjustable mono-shock in rebound and preload ensures the interface with the rear end via an asymmetrical aluminum swingarm. Brembo braking with radial four-piston calipers and 320 mm discs leaves no doubt about the machine's sporty intentions. At 198 kg fully fueled, this is serious equipment.
What truly distinguishes this generation is the density of onboard electronics. Three riding modes (Sport, Touring, Urban), a traction control system (DTC) adjustable in eight levels, a two-stage ABS that can be completely deactivated: the Ducati Hypermotard 939 specification reveals a machine that is noticeably more sophisticated than its rebellious looks suggest. Urban mode limits power to 75 horsepower and secures electronic interventions, useful in the city. Sport mode unleashes the 113 horsepower without unnecessary restraint, with less intrusive wheelie management for those who like to play with the front end. Facing an Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 that is more restrained in its intentions, the Ducati fully embraces its positioning as a radical leisure machine.
Two limitations deserve to be clearly mentioned. The seat height at 870 mm is a real obstacle for shorter riders, an optional low seat allowing a drop of 20 mm without completely resolving the problem. This is the price to pay for generous suspension travel (170 mm at the front, 150 at the rear) that gives this motorcycle its playful character. The other point of friction relates to the very thematic vocation of the machine: the 16-liter tank and a seat designed for fun rather than long-term comfort clearly orient the Ducati Hypermotard 939 towards recreational use. Those seeking more versatility will naturally turn to the Hyperstrada 939, a more road-oriented version of the same mechanical base.
At €12,390 at launch, the Ducati Hypermotard 939 price positions itself in a premium segment that few manufacturers dare to inhabit with such conviction. The SP version pushes even further with Öhlins suspension, an adjustable handlebar, and a more aggressive Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP kit, for riders who want the no-compromise version. For riders holding an A2 license, a Ducati Hypermotard 939 a2 version restricted to 47 horsepower also exists, which expands access to this platform. On the used market, the value remains strong, a sign that owners don't part with them without a valid reason. This kind of machine leaves a lasting impression on those who had the courage to choose it.
