Overview
The least one can say is that the Ducati Diavel shook the public at its launch. A blend of roadster and custom, with a Superbike engine in the belly. Never before had a “power-cruiser” with so many watts at its disposal. After a good decade of violence, it decides to move on to a totally different and equally demonic muscle.
With a V4. A big V4, to crack power at all levels. This engine, crammed with horsepower, has become a key element of the manufacturer. By replacing the enormous 1262 cm3 twin with this 1158 cm3 block, Ducati announces a logical increase in performance with a different character, rhythmically pulsed by the “Twin Pulse” timing.
The Diavel V4 sends out a lot of power with 168 horsepower at 10750 rpm. Six more horses than the V2 Diavel, which the rider will still have to go and find 1250 rpm higher. Fatally, the smaller displacement leads to less chubby torque. But 1/2 mkg of less torque will not be too detrimental, as the punch of 12.8 mkg can be copious. For those curious about the origin of the engine, don’t believe it’s transplanted from the Panigale or Streetfighter. No, no; Bologna preferred a less “aggressive” version. Namely, the Granturismo variant, developed for the Multistrada. It is also a little less powerful than on the trail; in exchange for a maximum torque available earlier.
This engine can also transform into a two-cylinder under certain conditions. Not to please purists but to reduce consumption. Thanks to the extended deactivation system, the rear cylinder is deactivated when riding at low load or at a standstill. Another consequence is that its sound changes. Deeper, the music will begin to rumble before all the pots are awakened and then take on clarified lyrics as the revs increase.
Such a temperament, the Diavel V4 expresses it clearly through its strong, almost thick lines, yet muscular like dry abs. Its bulldog appearance provokes more than it threatens, with a new inverted double C signature lighting, eager air intakes, side fairing elements that are less integrated but more mischievous, wheels with a very beautiful design, that ever-so-large 240 mm rear tire, and some striking images. Like the rear lights, with a diabolical honeycomb design embedded in the rear fender. Or the exhaust pipe, clearly displaying the engine architecture with its 4 outlet flutes. Above all, also, finally, the V4 - very visible because there is no frame around it.
Oh dear, that goes down hard with the Ducati fan club. Again, they’re going to say. Once again, a model where the iconic tubular trellis disappears. Instead, a monocoque aluminum structure supports the linkage between the 50 mm Marzocchi inverted fork and the Sachs shock absorber. Given the price of this Diavel, it’s surprising not to find Öhlins. But still…. And then the suspensions are fully adjustable. The rear even has 15 mm of extra travel, which should be felt in terms of comfort. In Bologna, nostalgia tends to fade before certain priorities. This is immediately apparent with the simple number 13. It’s the mass that the Diavel V4 has managed to eliminate since the 1260 S. Five kilos of difference just on the engine and eight extracted from the chassis. Accelerations and agility will appreciate its 211 kilos (dry weight). The machine would take less than 3 seconds to hit 0 to 100 km/h. Decelerating can also transform into a delicious exercise in efficiency with the Brembo Stylema calipers. Beware of the forearms when they bite the 330 mm discs. It’s the same as a hypersport, with a few extra kgs to calm.
The ergonomics on this motorcycle change a little compared to the “V2” Diavel. The seat is a bit higher (790 mm instead of 780 mm) and the handlebar is 20 mm closer. The seat is wide, still falsely selfish. The good trick of installing retractable footpegs continues its effect on this new generation. As for the grip handle, it is almost invisible.
Besides the style, here transcended, the V4 borrows little from the twin Diavel. Except on the side of electronics. It all starts with the unconditional riding Modes, numbering 4: the usual Sport, Touring and Urban to which is added the new Wet, softer than the others. The riding aids then consist of 3 levels of power, traction control and ABS both sensitive to angle, wheelie control, cruise control, Launch Control, Shifter Up&Down and cruise control. This Diavel receives a new 5-inch screen, with smartphone connectivity, call management, music and text messages, simplified navigation system, Ducati app and many functions.
By opting for the V4, the Diavel does not offer a lightning surge of power as one might expect. Perhaps Ducati is keeping a little margin. A few more horses, a different temperament, but still a very large cavalry. No other muscle-cruiser comes close to its heels. Question of price, however, this Diavel V4 has caught the fever.
