Overview

Ducati regularly opens up new horizons. After conquering the road trail (Multistrada), relaunching the Scrambler’s career, and electrifying the custom segment, the Bolognese firm is tackling the world of motocross. The Desmo450 MX is the first Ducati motocross bike in history. A bike born from the philosophy that has always guided the brand: experimenting and testing solutions in competition to then adapt them to production bikes.

The Desmo450 MX is designed around the 449.6 cm3 single-cylinder engine with Desmodromic distribution and represents a unique piece in the specialized off-road panorama, offering the possibility to exploit each gear to the maximum, at the start and between turns, thanks to a particularly favorable flow rate, which combines low- and mid-range torque with benchmark over-rev capabilities.

The lightweight aluminum frame was designed with as few welds as possible, for the benefit of the structure’s solidity, lightness, and rigidity. These choices immediately bore fruit in racing with Alessandro Lupino, who, after winning the first race of the Italian MX1 Championship, became national champion. These races defined the production bike and will constitute the best test bench for the continuous development of the Desmo450 MX and all models that will complement the range.

The Desmo450 MX also represents a first in its segment in terms of electronics. It is the first motocross bike in the world equipped with a traction control system capable of precisely defining the rear wheel slip. This system identifies driving phases where it should not be activated in order not to limit the bike’s performance. It can be instantly deactivated by the rider in situations where it is necessary to use all the engine’s performance, to be reactivated automatically shortly thereafter.

The Desmo450 MX offers a very sustained torque curve at low rpm, guaranteeing abundant power on corner exits, with a linear distribution and unprecedented acceleration in the category. This unique power curve, which delivers to the rider 70% of peak torque at 4,200 rpm, makes the Desmo450 MX less demanding and less fatiguing than a traditional 450, for optimal riding pleasure. This is made possible by the Desmodromic distribution, which, by reducing the energy required to open the valves, allows for more aggressive valve lift profiles, even with large-diameter valves.

Thanks to a bore and stroke of 96 x 62.1 mm, it was possible to use 40 mm intake valves and 33 mm exhaust valves. The former are made of titanium, while the latter are made of steel, with a hollow stem filled with sodium to improve heat exchange, increasing reliability and performance consistency.

Particular attention was paid to the cooling system, with rhombohedral radiators. A novelty in the segment, they offer a surface area of radiation 6.5% greater than a traditional shaped solution, thus improving engine cooling while maintaining the bike’s compactness, thus offering the rider a great freedom of forward movement.

The maximum power of the Desmo450 engine is 63.5 hp at 9,400 rpm, and the maximum torque is 53.5 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The rev limiter is set to 11,900 rpm, a new benchmark in the category.

The chassis of the Desmo450 MX is based on a perimeter aluminum frame. This layout was chosen to obtain a lightweight structure, allowing the engine to have as straight as possible intake and exhaust conduits, to guarantee optimal performance. The Borgo Panigale technicians managed to create an 8.96 kg structure, characterized by as few welds as possible, thus achieving the goals of lightness, reliability, and rigidity. The frame contributes significantly to containing the weight of the bike, in a ready-to-ride configuration but without fuel, to 104.8 kg.

The suspension and brakes of the Desmo450 MX were the subject of a judicious choice. Ducati relied on Showa’s long experience in competition, which was also chosen to facilitate adjustments for amateurs thanks to the technical layout of the spring and not air component for the elastic component. The fork is fully adjustable, with inverted 49 mm stanchions, a 310 mm stroke, and Kashima Coating on the stanchions. The shock absorber is fully adjustable and the wheel stroke is 301 mm.

For braking, Ducati also chose to collaborate with its historic partner Brembo for the development, also in motocross, of benchmark braking systems, as has been the case for many years on road bikes. The caliper is floating two-piston at the front and one-piston at the rear. Galfer brake discs measure 260 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear.

The Desmo450 MX features a true traction control system, capable of offering advantages in terms of lap times, rider safety, and energy saving. Unlike the systems currently available in the segment, Ducati’s Traction Control (DTC) installed on the Desmo450 MX calibrates the power cut based on the rear wheel slip, guaranteeing an effective, rapid, and linear intervention. This system is capable of identifying moments when it should not intervene, such as jumps, and self-exclude. Furthermore, if the rider identifies points on the track where he wants to fully exploit the engine’s performance, he can deactivate the system with a slight pressure on the clutch lever. Control will reactivate automatically a few moments later. Ducati’s traction control offers four different levels of intervention.

The electronic equipment also includes Launch Control and Engine Brake Control, which, like DTC, can be configured on different levels of intervention and associated with two riding modes that the rider can adapt to his needs and the track characteristics via the X-Link app. The gearbox is equipped with a quickshifter.

Maintenance intervals have been defined to reduce the costs associated for the customer. Replacement of the pistons is fixed at 45 hours, as is the control of valve play, while the total engine overhaul is fixed at 90 hours, values that are a reference for the segment.

The Desmo450 MX is the first model of a complete range of specialized off-road bikes, designed to propel Ducati towards new horizons, seduce new riders, and thus develop the Ducatisti community.
