What is the price of a Ducati 999 R? Thirty thousand euros. The price of a well-equipped German sedan, sunk into an Italian 999 cc twin-cylinder that screams at 9,750 rpm. In 2005, Bologna didn't do things by halves with its road-homologated superbike, and the model year we're looking at here represents the culmination of a lineage born for the track.

On the Ducati 999 R's spec sheet, the numbers speak for themselves. The offset V-twin produces 150 horsepower — eleven more than the previous model year — thanks to meticulous work on the cylinder head. Titanium valves with increased diameter, compression ratio raised to 12.5:1, redesigned cylinders, and revised engine management: the engineers at Borgo Panigale combed through every corner of the engine to extract every last drop of performance. Torque climbs to 119 Nm from 8,000 rpm, delivering a sharp surge of acceleration on corner exit without waiting for the needle to hit the redline. Against an Aprilia RSV 1000 R or a Honda CBR 1000 RR from the same era, the Italian twin plays a different card: fewer revs, more character. Every twist of the throttle tells a story.
On the chassis side, the tubular steel trellis frame remains a Ducati signature, but everything else has been refined. The reinforced swingarm adopts an aluminum axle mount, the fully adjustable Öhlins suspension features TiN-coated 43 mm inverted fork tubes, and the radial-mount Brembo brakes bite the dual front discs with surgical precision. The full carbon fairing has been reworked around the fork crown, with a raised screen improving aerodynamic protection. The result: 181 kg dry on the scales. For a machine capable of reaching 285 km/h, that's a power-to-weight ratio that places this Italian squarely in the territory of track weapons barely civilized by turn signals and a headlight.
The seat, perched at 780 mm, remains accessible, but make no mistake: this machine forgives nothing. The short 1,420 mm wheelbase and the 15.5-liter tank demand a relentless pace. You don't cruise on a 999 R — you ride it. The target audience is the weekend track rider who wants to ride to the circuit on public roads, or the enthusiast willing to sacrifice their back and wrists for the privilege of owning the replica of Régis Laconi's machine. Beginners need not apply, and that's just as well.
Finding a used Ducati 999 R today is something of a treasure hunt. With limited distribution — France having received only a handful of 2004 model year examples — 2005 models are few and far between in the classifieds. The Fila version, recognizable by its racing livery, drives collector prices even higher. At 30,000 euros new back in the day, well-maintained examples now trade at prices that reflect their rarity. This is the kind of motorcycle you buy with your heart before your wallet, knowing that every kilometer ridden will be a mechanical privilege. Ducati produced here one of its finest statements of sporting intent, a twin-cylinder superbike monument that neither time nor trends have managed to consign to oblivion.
