Overview

When Ducati introduced the Ducati 1299 Panigale S in 2015, the question arose immediately: who exactly is this 205 horsepower machine, drawn from a 1285 cm³ V-twin, sold for €26,390 and weighing just 166.5 kg dry? Certainly not novices. Nor are those who enjoy leisurely city riding. This S version of the Panigale is aimed at a rare category of riders, those who understand that raw pleasure is always negotiated at the price of total mastery.

Ducati 1299 Panigale S

The Superquadro engine pushes the logic of the sporty twin to its ultimate limits. With a bore of 116 mm for a stroke of 60.8 mm and a compression ratio of 12.6:1, the character of this V-twin is that of a track engine embedded in a road-legal homologation. The 145 Nm of torque available at 8,750 rpm leaves no ambiguity about the intentions of the Bolognese engine manufacturer. Faced with a BMW S 1000 RR or a Kawasaki ZX-10R of the same era, the raw power figure of the Ducati 1299 Panigale S’s 205 hp tells only part of the story; it is the density of this twin, its organic and nervous character, that distinguishes it from the Japanese or Bavarian four-cylinders, which are more linear but less expressive.

The S version justifies its premium price with a suspension arsenal whose foundations were laid by the 1199 S. The 43 mm Öhlins NIX 30 forks and the TTX36 shock absorber incorporate the SMART EC system, capable of operating in two distinct modes. In fixed-setting mode, the rider chooses their firmness according to the selected riding mode. In semi-active mode, sensors read the road in real time and adapt the damping without human intervention. For a track rider who knows their track by heart, the first mode offers a valuable consistency on a timed lap. On the road, the second transforms a potentially exhausting machine into something more habitable, without ever betraying its DNA. Forged aluminum Marchesini rims and a carbon fiber mudguard complete a Ducati 1299 Panigale S technical specification that leaves no box unchecked.

The onboard electronics function like an orchestra directed by a six-axis inertial unit. Traction control DTC adjusts on eight levels, as does the wheelie control DWC. Engine braking EBC operates on three levels. Bosch 9MP ABS modulates its intervention even in curves thanks to IMU data, and radially mounted Brembo M50 calipers on 330 mm floating discs leave no doubt about the braking capacity of a machine announced at a top speed of 300 km/h. The DQS quickshifter allows upshifts and downshifts without touching the clutch. Three predefined modes, Race, Sport, and Wet, reconfigure all parameters in a single gesture. In Wet, power drops to 120 horsepower and the management of the assistance systems locks onto its most secure position. For those still interested, a DDA+ GPS option allows you to record and analyze the data from each session.

The very structure of the motorcycle is worth dwelling on. The aluminum monocoque frame serves simultaneously as an airbox and a main structural element, the engine becoming a structural element in its own right. The rake of 24 degrees and the wheelbase of 1,437 mm define a geometry oriented towards reactivity rather than reassuring stability. This architectural choice explains why the used Ducati 1299 Panigale S still appeals to discerning buyers several years after its release: the architecture is consistent from beginning to end, without compromises diluted by Superbike homologation constraints, a category in which the maximum cylinder capacity mechanically excludes this 1285 cm³. The Panigale R ran in the championship; this 1299 S, on the other hand, has no one to answer to but its rider.
